Inadvertent roof operation

Was just inside the house front door today with a bundle of stuff in my hands I was about to try in the car, like cig power leads for phone, video camera, Pogo Alert etc. and also the key fob. As I struggled to negotiate opening and closing the door with all this lot pressed to my chest, I was shocked to see my Z4 roof closing as I arrived outside!

Obviously(?) I must have accidentally pressed on the fob buttons while trying to transport all the bits and pieces. Slightly worrying was the fact the roof didn't completely close and left a 1 inch gap and windows all down. A press of the in car close button sorted things out though.

Ironically I have already bought and have arranged to have a SmartTop fitted tomorrow. Since the roof seems to open and close OK from the fob as I hadn't ever tried before, I'm not now too sure why I went to the expense of getting one!

It is a late 2012 model Z4 sDrive28i M Sport and maybe has most of the roof useful functions anyway or not? I must admit I thought it didn't, as open and close required a continuous press when I tested it several times.

Therefore at a loss to find my roof performing on its own with me nowhere near it.

Anyone set my mind at rest please!

Cheers.

If your car has comfort access you can open and close the roof remotely via the fob. If not you should only be able to open it via the fob. In all cases you must hold the button continuously.

I've bought a cover for my key to try and avoid erroneous key presses.

Thanks for info.

I don't have comfort package. From what you say, maybe the roof was just starting to open rather than closing as I doubt I was pressing for more than a second or two.

I'll take greater care + get a key fob cover.

Time for the n00b questions...how do I know if I have comfort access ?

I have noticed a few times when I double click the open button on the keyfob the drivers side window drops 3/4

Comfort access will allow you to start the car without the key in the slot (keyless go as some brands call it), it also allows you to lock and unlock the car without the key buttons being pressed. There are a number of other things it helps with on the roof front etc... to find out all the functions of your car, get your VIN and go here:

I must admit that unless i'm planning to have the roof down on a particular day, I will leave the shelf in the boot in the open position, just so that I cannot accidently open it remotely.

- some of the places that I have to go and work, I cannot imagine coming out to the car at 6.00 in the evening and finding that the roof has been open all day...

Yes window will drop if you double click to help you get in car in tight spaces handy when its in the garage. :)

I got a big shock the other day. I was on my hands and knees cleaning the front end and stood up and started rinsing with the hose and to my horror the roof had folded away and the interior received a light splash :?
Keys in trouser pocket must have done it.

This sounds more likely, and I guess if you didnt see the direction it was travelling, then this would be the conclusion I would say.

Comfort ACCESS different to comfort PACKAGE.

I think the benefits of the smart top include 1 button press etc, whereas without it, you need to hold the button (fob or internal) so still worth it.

Comfort access is where you can keep the key in your pocket. Lock, unlock and drive off with the fob still in your pocket. It's good but annoying when I keep getting out of our X5 and leaving the keys in the ignition. Should have ordered it on both cars really.
