In the market for Z4MC

Hi guys, I'm seriously thinking about getting a Z4MC and have a couple of questions, some may be a little bit basic but I need to get them out of the way... I'm currently running an Exige S and a focus, so will be combining the two for something fun but can take on the GT role when needed.

So simple ones first, iPod integration. What packs do I need or what aftermarket kit is needed to properly integrate an iPod so I can control all audio through the head unit and wheel (I think I'll go for nav too as this seems essential for resale, not sure if this makes a difference). I know many have an aux in but I need to control all of it properly without faffing around. Obviously I'm happy to dispense with any changer that may be there as its a bit redundant if that frees up options.

On a similar note, Bluetooth; is the Bluetooth prep suitable for use with iPhones? It's pretty essential for me to be able to call when on the road, so would need to know if its worth getting this or if the reality is I'm going to have to get an aftermarket kit anyway so don't waste time looking for integration.

Other than that what are the things to look out for? I know that there is the snapping rear spring issues, and i've heard mutterings about the diff getting noisy. What else is there to look out for? I take it the vanos issue is sorted on these? Im planning on getting a car with the BMW warranty still in place, and keep extending it for a few years - if the car doesn't have this can it be reinstated? I guess not but worth asking.

And any essential options needed?

Sorry for the long post but I thought I'd ask it all at once!

I'll be looking to buy in the next two or three weeks, but will wait for the right car if I have to. Spec that I have in mind is a coupe, black or red preferred, blue possibly, silver out. Black interior preferred, with nav and Bluetooth prep. Under 20k miles preferred. Full BMWSH, and BMW warranty. If you've got something like that coming up for sale in the next few weeks let me know, but I will be waiting for a few weeks to shuffle money round.

Cheers, Paul

Can`t assist with too much of the info you need Paul, as I`m pretty new here myself, and mine`s "only" the Coupe 3.0si :P

It does, however, have bluetooth, which I`ve found pairs VERY easily with my iPhone. Mine also has Nav, so the full contacts list displays whenever you click the Telephone option on the Nav, and it quickly builds a list of last numbers dialled, and a "favourite" list (think it`s the most popular 8 numbers you use IIRC). Works excellently in my car, so I can recommend it highly, certainly within the few days use I`ve had out of it anyway.

Last, but not least, I can also HIGHLY recommend the Z4 Coupe, as well, Paul. Mine goes like an absolute rocket, and feels fantastic through the bends, especially when you start to get a handle on how to get the best from it, so I can only imagine what an M is like, with an extra 80bhp in there, and even sharper handling !

Good luck with your search mate.

Thanks for the info about bluetooth, I know it sounds stupid asking these things but I just want to make sure the basics are covered. I'm taking the view that if I can do it in an Exige I should be able to do it in a Z4M (OK I can't hear anything in the Exige, but thats another point :) )

ipod integration via bmw ipod kit, you will probably need a convertor due to the power usb/firewire pin issue. Apple store sell one, ipod kits can be had off ebay for around £70 DIY install

bluetooth is iffy at best, call quality less than ideal and would probably punt for an aftermarket parrot or similar to be honest, this would probably solve your ipod integration at the same time as iphone has ipod integrated and you can stream the music on the basic parrott I have fitted to another car

not sure warranty can be reinstated but may be possible after an inspection by bmw.

CSL's, dont bother with replicas it seems they buckle easily!!

Excellent thanks for the advice. Good to know about the ipod kit it's either factory fit plus the schoche adaptor or after market kit, I presume using the changer ports. OK, good to know it can be done don't mind a bit of fettling.

Interesting point about the bluetooth, I've used Bluetooth on an E90 but with a BB and that was pretty good, I thought they would be the same. Oh well probably not a deal breaker then.

I'll give the dealers a call about warranty, but I think I know what the answer will be there...

Already agree about the CSL replicas', I'd rather just get the originals and not worry they will buckle rather than save the cash - false economy for a car I need to just work when needed.

Cheers

Best iPod integration is Intravee (www.intravention.co.uk), you can see my installation how-to on this forum.

BT - I have a BB as well, works perfect and very clear (with roof closed or at low speed when open, not a problem for a MC of course). The cradle is great as well as it uses the car aerial as well as it charges the BB. Do plenty of conf calls using my BT in the car. Integrates fully in the satnav screen as well.

.

Had a search and it looks just the job. Have you got a link to the guide? I can't seem to find it no matter how I search, lots of references to it but not the guide.

Also as you use the KCE420, you would still need to power changer wouldn't you as the 420 is pretty long in the tooth so would still be set up for firewaire charging?

Have a good read of the FAQ in my sig - lots of links for this kinda thing.

Good luck & Welcome!

Oh... and yes you would need the adapter for the iPhone.
