In Car CD Copying/Playing

Please excuse the poor title of this post, but I really don't know what to call it.

I was talking to a work colleague who has a new Honda Civic and she was saying that the audio system copies CDs and then you can play them back, apparently with a large capacity. A bit like copying CDs onto a PC. This seems like a really good idea to expand one's in car music selection beyond 6 or 7 CDs.

Is anyone aware of after market equipment that does this?

As is probably obvious I don't live at the bleeding edge of technology! :P

Unfortunately I don't have Bluetooth. Indeed, the only mobile phone I have is the company Blackberry.

I did say that technology is not my strong card!

I see lol you can make data cds which will play on certain stereos. Easiest way I see if to just change the stereo put all your music onto a memory stick plug it in and :driving:

You could record music files in mp3 or other compressed format onto a CD, you would get the equivalent of many conventional CD's on one disc.

It all depends then on your car's CD player being able to play files in this format. I see you have a 2007 car, it should be able to handle it.

Sounds like your colleague's Civic has some sort of on board storage (hard disc maybe, like in the BMW Idrive system).

As yours is a 2007 car you should find that the in-dash CD player will play MP3 files

- Rip CDs to MP3 files
- Arrange in a file structure such as \Artist\Album to make the individual albums easy to locate
- Burn files to CD

This is assuming your grasp of technology goes that far?

If you've got the CD-changer in the centre cubby you can also load that with MP3-filled discs.

I still haven't got around to swapping it for a HD/USB/DAB system :headbang:

Thanks guys.

I do have a 2007 Zed with the 6 disc multi-changer in the cubby hole. I confess (unsurprisingly given my already proven lack of techno saviness) to never having explored ripping files to MP3 format, but I can usually muddle through on such things given time.

If all else fails I'll get one of the kids to sort me out!

For those of you at Sunday's meet don't be surprised to receive supplementary questions!

Thanks again.

If you've never done it before and have a Windows PC, Audiograbber is a pretty good place to start - it's free and fast

If you have a Windows PC, you should already have Windows Media Player, which will handle ripping from CD to MP3 files and burning the result to a CD full of MP3s. There's a how-to here, but a Google search may well return other instructions that fit your setup better.

My Zed is a year older than yours, and the single CD player seems to have a problem with MP3 files in subfolders. It handles the first folder OK, then fails to find any files in the next few folders. If you have this problem, just put all your files in the top-level directory of the disk: that works for me.

Thanks again chaps.

Time permitting tomorrow, when the really important business of cleaning the Zed and going out to lunch is finished, I may have a bash.

It was thinking about driving to/around and back from the English/Welsh meet on Sunday that made me think that may be more than 7 CDs worth.

E89 does this. copies cds to internal hard disk. Great for not carrying loads of cds in the car.

Doesn't that functionality only come with pro nav?

Correct but that's on F series etc as the E89 doesn't come with any type of iDrive unless you add the Sat Nav system unlike 3 series etc which come with a basic Sat Nav system.

But to get as much music as possible on it, you can also add MP3s to the hard drive

Only bothered once with the Idrive hard drive, took ages to copy files to it. The thought of editing the content filled me with dread.

I use a 16Gb USB stick full of music files in the armrest socket, works well. Easy to edit on my PC when I want to.
