Import Tax

Hi,

I just bought the clear set of lights from the US (rear lights, brake light and side indicators) for £112 (plus £34 delivery). Anyone have any ideas on how much the import tax will be?

From buying my stubby, IIRC, it was VAT on the whole amount including the carriage - based on their conversion of the $ price. Then, I think there was a £10 / £15 clearance fee on top.

Depends how the package is categorised... I think if the sellers marks it as a gift then you can get around the tax! Although that is probably going difficult for a headlight from a dealer.

EDIT - wasn't the stubby it was my Zeckhausen Racing CDV! Stubby didn't incur any tax... pretty sure it was a gift

I bought some kidney grilles from the US the other month, but ended up paying an extra £21 import tax and had to collect as well because the uk carrier wanted another £14 to deliver to the door,so another thing to bear in mind.

The 'gift' idea only partly works as custom and excise have limits and decide if it's really a gift.
I work on the basis of cost of goods plus shipping and packing. Add 5% import to that then VAT onto the total amount. Then as Pawnsacrifice notes an administration fee of £10. In your case that would all make £7.30 plus £23.00 plus £10, or £40.30

All being well you'll get away with a lot less.

My 'gift' camera marked as such was followed by a bill from FedEx just when I thought I was off free. Assessed it as £100 (Vs actual £450) in value added P&P for tax and a £10 admin and billed me.

EDIT - hope your US lights can be made to work as they're wired up different to the UK one's

so about £186... still not bad right?

They're US spec. how hard is it to convert?

This was my VERY simple reasoning why i think it would work... http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15359#p225498

Sounds about right, Peddy.

Not sure why they add vat to the carriage as well - to be honest I was too busy having a hissy fit as the clearing fee cost nearly as much as the CDV! It's a strange setup, but the time I received the letter the courier had already cleared the item and paid the duty. If I had refused to pay they would have then had to return it to the US at their cost... and would have lost the duty too.

Once I finished my tantrum I realised I was actually saving money!

Reference CJ's note about the compatibility Aebous might know in more detail as he's had his converted. Although at the moment I think he preoccupied with the snow!

If you have a read of the link I've posted in my reply above to CJ's you'll see why i think Aebous having to convert his car doesn't apply to me.

Sorry mate missed that bit... seems like you have it covered  I sort of understand the logic, sounds about right... so far as I can tell :?

Obviously I don't import into the UK but I do import from the USA to Canada. I've used the "gift " bit a few times for small stuff if the exporter is a "small" company, otherwise I'm stuck with customs duties and GST. One way to reduce costs is to use surface mail rather than outfits like Fed-Ex etc. Our posties charge a lot less and don't charge Brokerage fees.

what would be the taxes if something was shipped privately from the US to the UK? For example: If you had the item shipped internally to an address in the USA, that person then shipped it privately to your address in the UK marked as a gift ? (Internal shipping in the US is incredibly cheap by the way) I know there are a few people on here who live in the USofA, any comments?

Are these just lenses or complete lights? Seem incredibly low priced for lights.....how would they be wired different?

It's being delivered via USPS.

i didn't realise you could purchase just the lens by itself? this is the ebay item... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220524065106&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3AEOIBSA%3AGB%3A1123

It's being delivered via USPS.

The parcel i had sent from the states was sent via USPS but then transferd over to the post office but like i said earlier wanted another £14 to del

Does anyone disagree with my post in my "USA tail lights" thread... http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15359#p225498

I haven't paid for the lights yet, so if anyone knows this is not the case and will be quite difficult to convert to UK standard then please let me know.

Never done it so I can't be sure. I was just giving you the heads up in case you'd not considered it. In my experience on these Can Bus systems sometimes it's real simple as you say and in others it a real pita to make things work as the circuit detects things that are not where it expects them.

Good luck

Even with the import tax I think it's too good of a price to not give it a go... especially since they're brand new. after selling the brake and side indicator lights (since i already have clear ones) the rear lights would work out to be around £130. much cheaper then UK stealer prices.

Worse case scenario I think would be to cannibalise the rear lights and fit the lenses on to my current ones.

I just double checked with them and it's the whole light unit. :)

If its coming in USPS and has duties levied (likely) then you will find its cleared by Parcelforce and they add on thier nice little 'clearance fee' to the bill...

I had a certain gear knob that is well liked on this site shipped from the US privately as a gift. You do still have to declare the value of the item and so long as it is worth less than £35 you don't have to pay any tax. Good job that knob only cost $50.
