Import Duty

Hi all,

Does anyone know much about import duty costs, i.e. importing from from the USA into UK.

I have seen a watch I'm interested in located in USA and unable to find the same watch in Europe :( . I have used one of those online import duty calculators and its told me the duty on the watch will be £680 :o :? The watch costs 3K, surely thats alot of duty or have I worked it out wrong :cry:

It is duty as well as VAT that you need to add. With the watch being 3k, the VAT alone will be £600 ... (assuming 3k is GBP).
 
If it's that Tag you posted in the other thread be careful.
The winder was missing the red band which may mean a fake!! Reason I say this is I bought very very good copy of a ladies Tag from Turkey and the red rubber band on the winder fell off!! That wouldn't happen on a genuine one I'm sure.
I'd only buy from a shop that I know I can go back to should I have a problem. Shops will price match internet prices anyway so you won't be any worse off.
I do have a Carrera Calibre 6 and you can see the difference a mile off even though the copies are very good.
(Yes, I know I bought the wife a fake and I have the genuine :oops: She'll only scratch it, that's why!! :D )
 
For that amount it will be cheaper to take a holiday there and wear it on the way back :)

Its a big risk but haven't seen another tag like this one for sale at the mo :cry:

Think I will put the sensible hat on and buy in the UK lol or take a holiday :)

I've sold the Tag Monaco so I may just go back to Swiss Watches Direct to get a Carerra as they supplied me the Monaco.

I must be crazy even thinking of buying off ebay from a foreighn country :headbang:

Not only do you pay VAT on the watch, you will also have to pay VAT on the p&P and an £8 processing fee. I have imported an embroidery machine and fabric from the States, that's how I know. AND funnily enough, a TAG many years ago.

The duty is the VAT. The only other charge is the £8 handling fee as mentioned before.

Cheers for that, it is ridiculous, I've bought a few things for the Zed from the States and it can be expensive with the extra duty but fell off my perch when working the amount out for a watch, glad I did now :o

im a very regular traveller to the US and could give you a postal address in the US and or bring things back with out any worries

No, there is import duty as well as VAT.

Funny, the seller only describes the Box and papers as original, you may well be right. A well worded Fake :x
 
You pay duty plus the current VAT rate.

The duty depends on what the article in question is. I once brought in a Fender Stratocaster guitar that I bought during a trip to the states, that cost me (I think) 6% in duty on top of the VAT. I don't know what the duty is on watches, it must be easy to find on Google.

Does anyone know about Tag Carreras, I'm looking at this one which I know is from a reputable seller and doesn't have the red band on the winder as Lux implied. The Tag from the states I posted the link earlier also doesn't have a band on the winder.

Cheers Terry know what your saying, I bought my Tag Steve McQueen Monaco from Swiss Watches Direct so I know they only supply genuine goods as all the watches are screened.

Theyre a good 700 quid cheaper than Ernest Jones.
