Imola Red Z4M CSL

Hey up.

Was helping a friend move house at the weekend and happened to spot a bright red Z4 M with the CSL badgework.
As I went over to have a gander at the car porn, the driver was actually sat inside pairing his phone.

So as you do, we had a bit of a chat, and he showed me the mahoosive carbon fibre work going on under the bonnet of a CSL.
Very tasty looking modification :)

But the guy is going to be featured in next month's Performance BMW as they're pitting his car against the V8 m3.

i dropped the forum address with him, and he seemed a nice enough guy, but thought i'd share :)

EDIT: No shots, as my camera was out of juice :'(

Did look great - the only thing I actually didn't like were the CSL badges! Would love to have seen the car in person.

Some of the chaps that did the worked posted in Newbies the other week:

Magazine out now!

agreed about the csl badges.. they didn't really match up with the originals.
Maybe if it was the same size as the M it'd look better.. or maybe just replace the m alltogether..?

also, didn't realise he had it done in London... as he's in Notts.
Could've sworn he said something about the guys in Leicester.....

Just remembered to look this out...
Work was done by CA Automotive and A-L Tuning.

Details in case anyone is interested:
Z4M Roadster in Imola Red

ENGINE:
CA Automotive CSL-style carbon air box.
E46 M3 CSL cams
Evosport power pulley package
Custom live map by CA Auto/A-L Tuning
Eisenmann quad exhaust system
Rogue Engineering short shift and transmission mounts

CHASSIS
CSL Wheels in shadow chrome with PS2s
H&R Sport springs kit
Rogue Engineering rear shock mounts
Wiechers strut brace

EXTERIOR
BMW aero side skirts

Smaller detail, yes should have got rid of the M badge, or all of them! Sounds like a bit of a monster, would have been fun to keep people guessing. It certainly looks the part.

The one thing that they didn't mention, any of the costs! No doubt they would have been a little :o

I like the way that CA say that the CSL style airbox will give you 32bhp (as long as you get the exhaust & software of course), but fail to point out that a proper CSL needs cams, removal of AFM, & standalone management to get it's extra power.

I wonder why BMW didn't simply give the CSL to CA and get them to do the development instead, as I'm sure CA would have 'easily' found 60bhp

Indeed.

Nowack needed to wind up to 9000rpm + cams + exhaust + remap etc to find 400bhp from the M3 engine, so it makes you wonder how these other tuners can get anywhere near with what are essentially breathing mods and a remap.

No doubt they will have some shady dyno printouts to prove it :P

Anyone have any details/pics without me buying the magazine? Sounds cool either way :)

Dave

I sent a mail this morning to the magazine and asked if I could post some of the pics... wouldn't normally be too fussed but there is copyright and don't want them getting stroppy with the forum. I await their response. The article pitched the Z4M against a similarly breathed on M3.

I believe the kit listed above added about 60BHP. The thing that interested me was the 0-60 times... they claimed to have hit 4.8 seconds, but I'm pretty sure a lot of road testers have done that anyway!

There are a couple of other features in the magazine that were interesting - favorite being a modified M-Coupe. Also makes for an interesting directory of suppliers for modding kit.

but he DID get the cams, and the zorst, and the pulleys, and the remap, and the de-cat...
or am I getting confused with what you're saying?

lots of pics on the website.....looks like it might be worth buying the magazine for!

It's a long article and worth a read. Won't spoil it and no I'm a cheapskate and read it in WHS while MrsCJ was spending, so no details to post up.

The 'Z4M CSL' is in this months Performance BMW magazine, it's a good read, I don't think the tester got the best performance figures out of the car, didn't want to rag it with the owner stood watching

It's had a lot of work done

Alpha N mapping, CSL cams, CSL air box

People should really find out the facts before making glib posts

Any independent dyno runs to prove the facts ;)

What timing gear was used? Was rollout included?

Not having a dig, but tuners and their figures often have a great deal of optimism to them!

Nothing wrong with healthy sceptisism :)

Still a nice car :)

i read it in chavda, sorry Asda whilst waiting for the wife. The car looked great !

These would look soooo nice under my bonnet http://www.ca-automotive.co.uk/show_big-cGF0aD1lbmxhcmdlbWVudHMmcGljPUVuZ2luZV9Db3Zlcl9CTVdfRV80Nl9DYi5wanBlZw==.html

Would like to see them in the flesh though not cheap

Can someone scan in a pic?
Is PBMW mag alright or is it a bit like Max Power?

Bobbydm came through.. link on previous page (his one).

Reference the mag... a bit max power but with nicer cars at the start, IMO. Worth picking up, the MR article is good. I'm going to keep it aside for reference - lots of ads for dealers that sell bits / mods for Z4s... save a lot of Googling.

Led me to see this, quad system on a 2.5!

Not too sure about the other bits, but wow, looks great! Bet it sounds the business too.

Great find, you also found a black z4 with blacked out rear lights!(I've been searching for that!).... 2 birds with 1 stone....

Cool - I couldn't remember who was looking at the blacked out lights.

Another find in the magazine... A-L Tuning (www.a-ltuning.com) are offering 20% off Eisenmann exhausts until 31st February. 15% off Supersprint - not sure how that compares to other though. 20% off fitting too.

Hi to all, I'm the owner of the Z4M 'CSL'. Had the work carried out at CA-automotive and AL-Tuning. I remember the two guys to coming over to have a chat when I was tying to get my iphone sync'd with the car.

During the photo shoot for performance bmw at Bruntingthorpe my car was running a standard map kicking out 365bhp. They took the car back as they had a flat spot to fix and to add the supersprint de-cats. Mike & Roy at AL-tuning & CA-Automotive desided to give me a race map which inturn is now kicking out 380bhp. However the ECU needs to adapt and needs a number of cycles to settle. The car is planned to go back to AL-Tuning in March for a final tune . So expect another 5-7bhp. Also before giving the car back Mike said he ran a 0-60 in 4.2secs.

The amount of money I spent I could of have a supercharger, but I didn't want to go the forced induction route. I wanted the sound of the CSL carbon airbox induction sound, but then got the bug of Shrick 'CSL' cams, big bore throttle kit etc. Have to say the car sounds amazing 'love tunnels', even better than the CSL. The guys at CA-automtive and AL-tuning Rob and Mike have been great and very professional.

Regards, Brendon
