Immobiliser issue ??

I recently fitted a seat pad sensor and seat belt emulator and needed a person with a scanner to clear airbag light , my neighbour said his friend could do it for a few beers , however after some time on the scanner the car then refused to start stating immobiliser issue ,’?!? (Started perfectly before he plugged in unit) Could he have possibly done something on scanner to de/programme EWS or ECU or got them ‘out of sync’ ? I’m now at a total loss as car won’t start and airbag light still on ?! 🤦‍♂️…… fed up / Gary 😢

Which scanner did he use?

I’d say it’s highly unlikely… but who knows

Worth scanning again to see what’s showing up code wise

Ok, I’ll ask him to rescan it again , but it was something to do with immobiliser not communicating with ECU I think he said ?

Hi Gary. Has to be something he did.
Remember you sent the EWS off for your new key and it all worked after that.
Plus there were no codes when I checked after we did the roof hinges.
Do the keys still work? Have you tried coding them again, just in case?
Try disconnecting the battery for half an hour, just in case it needs a bit of a reset.

Been chatting to Gary but think this would be better on here in the hope of getting more input and eventually being of use to others.

So it seems the chap with the OBD reader has caused an issue somehow. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to have left a list of codes.

1. Battery disconnected overnight but made no difference.
2. Both keys checked, both work correctly and the symptoms are the same with either one.
3. Engine turns over but does not fire ([ref]bigwinn[/ref], sound familiar?)
4. It appears that the EWS is not communicating properly with the DME. When you try to start the car, the DME asks permission from the EWS (Immobiliser). In this case it appears the EWS is not recognising the DME so won't allow fuel or a spark.
5. This is exactly the issue you get if you swap out the DME and requires a bit of software that tells the DME not to talk to the EWS.

We have a big problem if this is the case, because there is no software available to do this on the DME type for the N46 engine.
The only answer in this case would be to fit a matching DME and EWS from a donor car. However, then you have other issues with keys etc, so you end up having to also swap, from the same donor, the keys, ignition barrel, door key barrel and boot key barrel!

[ref]Gaz5855[/ref], is currently looking for a mobile auto electrician who can hopefully sort it out more easily than that.

I didn’t realise there wasn’t a bimmer software set up for the n46!

I think your prognosis is correct

I got the one for the M54 and then the one for the N52.
Looked on the website and they don't do the N46 (MV946) for the full immobiliser delete.

I was thinking as my keys are now able to open as covers are aftermarket and unclicks could I change DME and EWS from a donor car and then replace the circuit boards from donor car onto my cut key blades therefore would I not have need to replace locks ?

There was a software glitch in the Foxwell NT520 and NT530 scanners with BMW software. The glitch would take the DME and EWS out of alignment. A software update fixes the problem with the scanner. There must be lots of non-updated scanners out there still.

Legit? That’s pretty bad if so

What’s the fix? Update software and it reverts the issue?

Yes it's legit

We had several cases in the E46Fanatics forum that confirmed it.

Update the software and all was good again.

Seem to remember BMW scanner 1.4 can resync EWS to DME which may resolve the issue.

Well ! Looks like NZ003 was spot on! There must have been a glitch in software as once software was updated (£45 update cost) this resync’d ews and DME and car started !
Phew !! What a relief…, never would have thought it was dodgy software?! Thank you all for you support, help & advice .. Gary

Well after a software update the EWS & DME re-synced and car started… phew ! What a relief!! Thanks all for your help and advice! Gary

Wahay!!!!
I hope he didn’t make you pay the update cost?

Yet again the forum comes up with the answer ?
