Took #308 over Salisbury Plain this morning as the Imber Range road is open until the new year. It was very icy but a fantastic drive with the top down. I did get some strange looks from the guys in the 4 x 4 convoy with all their camo gear on - we did look like chalk & cheese.
They can't go off-road there as there are too many unexploded shells around. :o

We have been up on Salisbury Plain watching tanks etc before as live down near Winchester. Can you give any more info on how to get there, exactly were it is please as your pics look stunning and would love to take our Tangerine Dream up there. We actually had quite a nice drive up over from Ludgershall today towards Savernake and Marlborough before heading home past Salisbury and Stockbridge. Nice to hear that we aren't the only ones who like having the top down in the colder weather.

Is it worth a long trip up to see, or just a nice novelty for the locals?

Probably more of a nice drive for us locals. The old village has gone & been replaced by breeze block shell buildings, all that is left to visit is the church - pretty but absolutely freezing - with coffee & cakes for sale.
We would have loved to go for a walk as it is a beautiful spot but there are signs everywhere warning you not to go off the carriageway. I did stop to take a photo next to one but the battery in my camera ran out. :x
There are some old tanks lying around too, shot to pieces & obviously used for target practice.

Hi Californiagirl
it was chilly when out of the car but lovely & warm with the heated seats & heater turned up.
We drove the road on Saturday starting from the A360. We were coming from Devizes, you go through West Lavington climb up a hill onto the Plain & in less than a mile there is a right turn. The place is called Gore Cross but there is not much there. There is a big red sign on the Imber road that tells you if it is open or not. The road is pretty good all the way, a few potholes but most smaller than the ones you find on normal roads. We found the first section of about 1 mile was very narrow with no passing places & just muddy verges. Yesterday we took the 1 series so were able to squeeze through with wheels on the mud although there were only a few cars coming the other way.
Today I decided to come in from the Warminster end. The road starts at the junction of Imber road & Copheap Lane & from this direction is wide enough for two cars all the way. This is the end that where you can see the tanks. Part way along is a left turn that drops down to Bratton village but I don't know what that road is like. It can't be too bad as a convoy of about 15 2CVs headed that way yesterday although they could still be stuck there
The B&W photo is taken at the highest point - Tinker's Track - & you can see for miles

Looks Awesome, I wouldn't mind a blast across there!

You're supposed to keep to 30mph
I was taking it easy today as there was thick ice in places. It is usually open at Easter too & maybe at the end of August but probably more people there too.
If you look at this thread on Pistonheads

there is a video of the drive from Warminster posted recently
