I'm tall, will I fit in a Z4...?

Morning all,

I've been thinking about getting myself a fun car, with the requirements being:

Convertible.
2 Seater.
Manual.
Rear wheel drive.

It must also be able to do longer runs on the motorway in comfort too, as most of my friends as scattered around the country. (No Caterhams!) I thought a Z4 would be one of the best things to get, as I can put the roof up, the music on, blast down the motorway, and drop the roof when I get there to enjoy cruising around.

The only problem is my size. I'm 6' 7" tall, and a salesman at a BMW dealership said I'd really struggle to fit. I'm not sure whether he was trying to get me in a new 1 series rag top, (not too over budget, but not a 2 seater,) or a new Z4, (not in my price range.) They didn't have a 2nd hand Z4 on the lot for me to try out.

Should I spend time trying to find one, only to not get in it, or should I start to think about other alternatives? What are people's experiences? Can you (grudgingly) suggest alternatives if I won't fit in a Z4?

Cheers, and thanks for your time,

Lewis.

Welcome :D

6' 7" :o TBH you might struggle but it all depends where your height is! Im 6' and have no trouble. I have long legs, short body, some have short legs long body.. if you get what I mean!

Best bet really is to try one or two (different seats may fit differently) Sport versus MSport for example...

find one and sit in it. or keep the roof down all the time

being serious, i think you might struggle, im 6 1" and im ok, my dads 6 5" and he is just ok with adjusting the seat as far as it goes. but its worth trying one out to be sure

Thanks to all, I'll go for a look at the weekend, with license, just in case...

Gannet, what's the story with the seats? I would have thought the MSport ones are more "Buckety" so may sit lower and further back, is this the case?

Were they only available on specific engine sizes? (That could help narrow down my search.)

Cheers!

MSport are more buckety but Ive no idea if the go any further back or are lower than other seats...

they became available in 2004 I think, then after the facelift in the Sport models they were standard and optional on SE I believe - someone correct me if Im wrong!

dont think they were limited to engine size - Im sure Ive some 2.0 cars with them so that wont help your search...

Hi Lewis

M sport seats are no lower nor do they move any further in adjustment than standard. In fact they are just different shaped bolsters on the same frames. ( I know as I've converted some) The only difference you may find is the amount of padding on the standard seat may make it marginally higher, but that would be outweighed by tight bolsters holding you on the M sport

The limit of movement back is controlled by the rear bulkhead and they are pretty much on the floor already.

To be honest as suggested you just have to go sit in one and figure it out

Welcome to the forum Lewis.

The Z4 sounds perfect for what you want. But i really don't know about that height! As already said, the best bet is to go and sit in one and then you can start making some decisions.

my mate is 6"6 and a rugby player so he's a pretty big unit! He struggles to get in the passenger seat tbh so you might have some trouble getting behind the wheel.

get yourself to the dealer and go try it out :driving:

Thanks for that. Although I will try one, I'll not get my hopes up...

So, any other suggestions to fill my criteria?

I,m only 5' 11" and have the seat right back on the stops, wouldn't like to be driving if I was 6' plus. go and try one for size :driving:

SLK? but again youd have to see if you fit...

Dude, I'm only 5' 7", and although have ZERO headroom issues, it does get uncomfortable at/around the 2 hour mark. Its a great weekend car, but long motorway drives can sometimes get sore.

If you're tall and looking for a sports car, your best bet is always Porsche. I don't know if it's because Walter Rohrl is tall or not, but they always have serious legroom.

you must have crazy long legs then lol. I'm 6ft3 with long legs, and I have no problems, i only just recently moved the seat back as far as it will go (always messing about adjusting it), and i have it bolt upright.

I'd have thought it would be ok, any 2 seater is gunna be a bit of a squeeze. Don't bother trying an S2000 though, they are definately a tight sqeeze!

6'1 here with 34" inner leg and there's loads of headroom, plus the seat still has a couple of inches to go back I reckon. Just enough room for me to wear a helmet with the roof up but only just, but haven't actually tried driving with it on yet!

I've got a mate who's 6'5 with an Elise, a right pair of idiots we must've looked on a wet trackday with the roof off because we don't fit in his with the roof on

So you sit in your car with a helmet on, and dont drive? :scratchhead: :poke:

Just trying it for future trackdays :D

Wouldn't want to be spotted blatting around my local area wearing a helmet on public roads...
