I'm owed money... any advice/ experience ?

Hi all,

Not been posting too much recently as new job (started in Sept) is keeping me busy travelling and working hard!

Anyway, I am owed money from a residency job as a musician which finished a little while back due to changes in management/ ownership at the venue. I won't go into too much detail but the work was formally invoiced etc. but it's becoming clear I may not see my money without a fight.

I know we have some self employed members on here and wanted to know if anyone has any experience going the small claims court routes etc... and likewise whether anyone has suggestions as to other routes/options I should consider...?

Contract the debt collection to a 3rd party company or enlist the help of a time old friend



But honestly, small claims court can be quite time consuming, especially if there is limited legal knowledge.

I would give the venue the benefit of the doubt and write them a letter (recorded delivery) outlining that a failure to pay will lead to you taking legal action.

With a little bit of luck, that may persuade them to pay up!

Small claims may offer a solution but is likely to take a while

Use money claim online, https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/web/mcol/welcome

Send them a letter first informing them what you intend to do and give them a fair period to pay, say 2 weeks, obviously send the letter recorded delivery.

If they haven't paid in 2 weeks then file with money claim online. I'd only bother if its at least a grand otherwise its more hassle than its worth though. Small claims court is a piece of piss if you're 100% in the right and have your head screwed on. You can claim for your time and interest and costs incurred.

Most people will cough up as soon as the letter arrives on their mat. Good luck.

Companies that don't pay or pay late used to be the bane of my existence, good terms and conditions and staggered payments will insulate you from these tossers. :wink:

If it's a club you're dealing with best of luck.
I've had to write off monies owed as the owners don't take too kindly to being threatened with court action.
I think the ones I've had trouble with have the club as a place to do their dodgy deals!!
If ever i do work for clubs now it's cash up front or they can go somewhere else.

I hope you get paid though

My advice is put it down to one of those things, never let it go keep chasing but don't let it consume your life. Speak with a solicitor and small claims them. Remember in these situations only the solicitor wins, like in a divorce!

I am owed over £80,000 from a delightful gentleman who stole a lot of money back in 2006/09. It consumed my life for over four years, which was pretty much the court case and chasing assets/putting charges on them etc etc. when I look at it I wasted a lot of time and money which I could have put to far more positive use. There are scumbags out there and they will never go away unfortunately.

PS Until this thread I had forgotten about it thanks for awakening it for me, well at least for a few ours :wink:

In my experience, regretfully, chasing it the legal way and paying further costs doesnt work. They know all the loop holes.

Id either ask a big ugly bloke to chase it and offer him a percentage if he collects it, or right it off and put it down to experience....
