I’m new and I’m researching

Hello everyone. New to the forum and more than strongly pondering Z4 ownership - certainly not a daily driver - of the pre or facelift E85 3.0 roadster.

Couple of questions if I may. We are in the long and stressful process of moving and the new property has a partially converted garage meaning our cars will be driveway parked. Am I mad to buy a Z4 for non-daily use and park it on the drive?

How much mileage is too much mileage or no such thing?

How do I break it to my wife without her breaking me? :)

Have had 2 MR2 Roadsters (12 years) a Porsche 718 Boxster (3 years) and my current Z4 all sit on my drive year round in Scottish weather.
Be fine. You may want to put a cabrio shield on it if close to trees and a smart trickle charger.

Welcome aboard.
My wife's 53-plate 2.5i sits outside and wears a cover just over the roof and windows. Without this you run the risk of filling up the rear arches and drowning the roof motor. Plenty of threads to search on here about that little scenario.
The facelift cars had the N52 motor of which I have no experience, but the earlier ones had the M54, of which I'm now on my third. Personally I would not be concerned at anything less than 130-150k. Buy on condition, evidence of proper maintenance and history of work done.
If its going to be a weekend fun car then you likely won't be adding huge amounts of miles anyway.
There are forum members dotted all over, so hopefully you can find someone nearby who would be prepared to help out if needed, checking out prospective purchases, or showing you what to look out for.
As for the wife? I got round that by buying her one as a Valentine's present, so she kind of forgave me.

Hello and welcome, I bought my E85 2.2 roadster from a forum member in October 2021 who bought it from another forum member. Came with lots of paperwork and self service records so this is a good place to buy from. Keep an eye on the Z4s for sale section. Mine is left on the driveway all the time and is not a daily driver and it seems fine, roof motor in the boot though. I have seen a few around that are also kept on driveways and one poor car that is kept in the road. As for my wife, she got fed up with me banging on about my old MGB roadster that I'd owned in the 70s and told me to 'For gods sake' buy a 2 seater car and get it out of your system. So I did. :D

Thanks for the lovely welcome, response and advice.

I'm going to write you a prescription for two testicles, get that filled ASAP. :D
Id usually say that was spot on. However, my wife has very recently given birth to our 3rd child, so I’d better tread carefully

I’m based in Bucks, near to Milton Keynes, Leighton Buzzard etc.

OK, so that prescription is obviously not needed!
Then I'd suggest the approach should be "It'll give me something different to do in the evenings dear."

Exactly, she can’t get pregnant if you are online looking at car ads, out buying a car, driving a car once bought or working on it. 8)

Can she?

Potentially dangerous ground there old friend.
Poor old [ref]Neens76[/ref]! He'll never come back after this baptism.

Best he learns early that their are people like you on the board mate, luckily balanced out by kind and thoughtful people like myself. :D

Strange, the drop down menu next to a username that allowed you to quote that username seems to have vanished.

Bring it on, I’m thick skinned. Anyway, isn’t how it works, one agrees to a 3rd child and one gets a 3rd car on the drive?

Well, I guess I’ll look at posting a wanted ad in the buy/sell section.
Any owners on the forum North Bucks/South Beds way?

Welcome to the Mad house. Ignore the forum pets OP.

A well cared for Z4 85 will do major miles. Just go for condition.

I bought my wife an Mx5, she was happy with that.

Hi and welcome to the forum OP.

The facelift models have the N52 engine and I'm on my 4th, two in Z4s and two in 3 Series. My first 3 Series had done 139K when I sold it and my current one is on 116K. Engines in both were smooth and pulled strongly so I certainly wouldn't be too concerned about 6 figure mileages, but as others have said history and condition are the main things to look out for.

Good luck with your search.

Her hatchback and my estate just about cover duties that 3 children, Labrador and mountain bikes bring. Buying her a two seater to validate my 2 seater purchase might just add fuel to this fire  But kudos if it worked for you!
