Now you've gone and done it :headbang:

The lads will be round in about 5 minutes...they've just got to sign on first :P

Surely any cloned plate scam can only last a short period and the owner must know about it as they would get rumbled if they tried to tax test or insure the car plus they couldn't get the V5 from the DVLA either.

I just doesn't add up. Only reason I can see for using copy plates is to temporarily hide a dodgy motor's identity to be used in some other crime.

If you are sure your car is 100% legit don't sweat it. You have done nothing wrong so let Lambeth Parking waste their own time sorting their own mess out. 99.9% of these parking enforcement set ups are social parasites that add no value to humankind whatsoever. The world would be a better place without them all.

I was going to point out that the owner of the other car cannot of bought it on the plate it's on otherwise the V5 would have gone to him and then mmmfive wouldn't have received the fine either. So they must know what they are doing.

They would get a bit of a shock come Tax time though @ £480 or whatever it is at the current time.

Not mmmfive's problem. It's down to the DVLA and the Police. As the Police are not likely to catch them the DVLA will have to issue mmmfive with a new reg and blacklist that one. I would be expecting DVLA to pay for the new plates and fitting too. It's their system and law abiding citizens should not have to fund breaches that they or the Police have failed to prevent or detect.

Cant see the DVLA paying for new plates, I dont see that you can blame them for someone else cloning them.

Is it mmm-five's fault? Should he fork out cash 'cos of the clone?

May not be DVLA's fault either but it's their system so they have more ownership than a random law abiding motorist.

I'm sorry but the government could have by now introduced far more robust controls over this kind of thing by tying insurance tax and mot together in one process and database and they could be benefiting from alerts where the same reg no is recognised in different parts of the country outside of possible travelling times etc.

The authorities have chosen not to tighten the controls so they should not expect us to incur costs when criminals give them the run around.

So if I stole a car and put the registration plate of a near identical car on it I would not need to tax, test it insure it and could run it for years as the tal car owner would hopefully be doing that. Any police check would show the real car taxed tested and insured so I'd never be stopped. If a visual stop was done for no tax disc I'd claim I'd had it stolen off the screen and of course the real car would be taxed and show on their system.Only difficulty might be matching to the real owners address to quote to police if asked, but not impossible. I can see the scam working for ages.
Presumably in this case as mmm is reporting it that plate will be tagged to pull the car as soon as it's seen.

when i was in europe a few thought crossed my mind, if somebody stole a foreign car and brought it to th uk, would it ever get stopped by the uk police? would they ever do a pnc check on a foreign plate? would they ever realise it was stolen? etc?

Nope, I drove for years on a foreign plate without any bother of any type of fine / ticket I received during that time. Did not bother taxing abroad nor in the UK either :)

Guess that is why there are so many Polish cars in the UK as well, neither country knows the car exists ...

mmm - what's the update on this? Interested to know how it plays out. There's a black bmw z4 being sold locally (3miles) from where I live.. which is probably 7 or 8 miles from Lambeth, and looks just like that one.. I didn't buy it because it looked dodgy (2 months ago).. will try and find it if I can.

Not much to update at the moment:
  • the police report has been done, and I have a log number
  • I filled in a DVLA form on Friday, but I guess I won't hear anything for a few working days
  • the PCN appeal, with police log number, has gone directly by email to the guy I spoke to the other day
Just a matter of waiting now.

If you see it again, or find out it's for sale, especially with my reg, then call the police 101 number and report it.

Police log number is 1428/04102012 or 20121004-1428 - was quoted to me both ways.

go get the bastard

This thread's getting more interesting by the hour! :o

Think I'd contact seller for a "viewing" :D

( And NOT turn up in an identical car, before anyone suggested that)

Maybe the Brits need to adopt the system used by 99% of the rest of the world. You buy and register a car. You are handed an officially made stamped steel number plate. Rather than you having a plate made at Halfords.
