I'm contemplating a Z4

A few weeks ago I was happy with my cars but due to a driver behind me using my car to stop instead of the brakes on her car I've now got a bit of a dilemma.

I've had two cars for a few years now, my daily driver was an Impreza and my occasional fun car is a classic mini. Whilst my Impreza was being assessed I was given the following as a courtesy car.

A 60 plate 35 Sdrive. Now this was a very very nice car, it was also very expensive, a lot more money than I can contemplate spending on a car. I put the z4 out of my mind and bought myself a replacement daily driver. I didn't want to rush into buying anything so I picked up a 10 year old Volvo V40 so that I could contemplate what I wanted to buy.

Now for the problem - I'm loving the Volvo. It doesn't feel as old as it is, it's got all the toys on it, practical and it's reasonably efficient. This leaves me thinking, maybe instead of getting a new daily driver why don't I get a new weekend toy! Obviously the mini would have to go which would make me a bit sad but I'm sure a nice Z4 could take that pain away. :D

The new shape Z4 is way out of my price range but from a bit of digging around on auto trader I think I could pick up a pretty tidy 2.5/3.0 for around the £10k mark. The question is is the original shape as good to drive as the new one? Also I'm not really a fan of the large (usually) silver insert on the dash, its this easy to remove and wrap?

This isn't a decision I'm going to rush into but this looks a great forum for doing some research on.

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

For your 10K budget you should be able to get a wonderful Z4 either Roadster or Coupe, there are various specs which could be added when new, I don't know about the other dash options on the non ///M cars but have seen gloss black which looks lovely, maybe another member can let you know of other options, good luck with your search :thumbsu

Hello and welcome

have a look at the coupe

A roadster will provide you with a better driving experience, and you'll be able to get a cracking car with your budget. If you're going from an Impreza, the 3.0 will provide the sort of power you're accustomed to....

Good luck! Happy hunting :driving:

Hi & welcome!

The older model E85 drives very well indeed. From a handling perspective I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed in the E85, it's lighter car than the E89 and I think it feels quite a bit better for it.

For a weekend toy, go for a pre-facelift 3.0i, very good MPG, power and reliability. Alternatively, for £10K you could get a very nice facelift 2.0 and have the Z4 roadster driving experience, 40+mpg and use it every day!

You get a much more useable boot in the E85 BTW as there's no hard top taking up space when stowed.

Best of luck and let us know what you do.

Cheers,
John

Thanks guys but sorry Taz but if I go for a z4 it will be the convertible. I've really missed roof down driving for the past few years so I'd love that option again, it's a treat for all the senses especially with that 6 pot engine on full song.

Plenty of advice on the car already.
The dash can easly be uk clipped and swapped or wrapped. I love fheballynbutnpersonal choice.

More important is to sort out options you need that are difficult to swap (sports seats, xenons, etc.)

Great to hear you like the Roadster :)

If you get the 6 pot 3.0 there's a 2 minute modification to BMWs sound generator which will let you hear the full 6 pot song, in all its glory. Try a quick search and you'll find loads

That was a hell of a loan car!! 8)

No silver dash in an Alpina (it's leather :D ) but you'd struggle to find one in your price range. But you wouldn't have to fiddle with sound generator stuff as it has its own as standard

My z4 has just gone into the dealers for work and I got a naff Bmw series 1 diesel as a loan car, wish I got one of them!!!! :driving:
There is a metal swirl dash that is marmite for sure.

3 Months ago I swapped my M3 for my son's E85 '05 plate 3.0 Z4 convertible. The Z4 is the best thing ever! Don't get me wrong, the M3 was brilliant in a serious way. The Z4 is brilliant in a "fun" way. Go for it!

These cars seem to offer a great deal of value and are very tempting. I need to throw a few quid at the mini to get it back into top shape then get that sold before I go the z4 route but it's definitely on the cards.

As for what I'm going to be looking for I'm thinking 3.0 preferably in black but definately with heated seats , any other options will be a bonus. I'm not fussed about sat nav etc as it will never be my everyday car. I got a fair bit of abuse thrown at me by the general public when I had the courtesy one and I don't really want that on a daily basis.

I think I'l be keeping a fairly low profile on here for a while whilst the mini gets sorted out and sold but I think I'll be back and making noise on here soon.

In the mean time if anyone wants to buy a 1275 Italian job mini with gas adjustable shocks and hilo's on, 35k miles give me a shout.

Now THAT is a proper Mini - gorgeous

As for abuse from the general public - doesn't take long for your ears and eyes to tune it out, trust me :D

As he prefers the roadster. He's obviously a member of Mensa. Helps little old ladies cross the road. Gives generously to charity. And has impeccable taste. :D

Love that mini to.
