Illuminated gearknob

As part of the ongoing saga of my interior retrim, I am going to be fitted an illuminated gear knob....

I've been trawling through at a fair few threads about this subject and have to say that I am very confused by conflicting information on the subject. The best method seems to be to wire it to the cigarette lighter socket. However, I've just read a thread that seems to suggest that this might be 'live' at all times...

Would I be correct in assuming that the light for the cigarette lighter only comes on with the headlights? If that is the case, surely that would be best option... or is there a problem with that idea?

A definitive answer would be handy... thanks in advance!

I fitted an illuminated knob (awaiting massive p*ss taking now), just wired it to the light on the cigarette lighter. It comes on when i switch the lights on!

Thanks both. Thought that was probably the best option, but I've found it's best to check these things before diving headlong into the job...

The power is "live" on the cigarette all the time, but the light for it only comes on with the rest of the interior dials light up.

I'm halfway through modding one and have thought about connecting it to the sport button light. Thought it might look cool that way.

Thanks aquazi... so, when some people were saying that they had connected to the cigarette lighter, what they were actually meaning - probably - was the light...

OK. That's what I hoped would be the case... :)
