Illuminated Door Sill Finishers

Should both door sill fnishers (kick plates) illuminate blue in the dark? I have just noticed that only "<Z4>" on the left door sill finisher glows, but not the right one. I don't think they need power to illuminate. Am I right?

How would they work without power??

Yes the both illuminate -if you have the upgraded one's fitted - well mine do.

I thought the "<Z4>" was just reflective. So the driver side has got no power in my car then?

Well you either have the basic silver strip which of course is only reflective, or if illuminated blue then it's got no power, bulb gone, connector loose, etc.

How do I remove the sill finisher to check the bulb? Has anyone got the internet link for BMW Parts?

I did check both sides, the driver side is the same as the passenger side, the <Z4> is blue, but does not glow.

PM me an email and I'll send you the BMW retrofit instructions.

Thanks. I found the instruction on the internet. It is not easy. The whole door sill finisher needs to be replaced (no bulb) if it is faulty. As I only picked the car up last Friday, I will bring it to the local dealer tomorrow. The replacement should be covered by either New Car Warranty or Approved Used Car Warranty.

Cool - I'd def get the dealer to fix it if it's a new warrantied purchase.

I think your right and it does look like a non servicable item

I took my car to my local dealer today. They said a new retrofit kit is required (BMW do not supply a single piece of plate). The kit is over £300. I phoned dealer that I bought the car from, and I am still waiting for reply. Then I rang BMW GB about Used Car Warranty, as the illuminated door sill finishers are accessory item fitted by dealer. They were only covered by 24-month fitted parts warranty. I phoned the original dealer that supplied the car. The previous owner fitted them over 24 months ago. So I can't get any replacement free of charge.

The standard door sill strip is about £20 each. Can anyone show me what it looks like. I couldn't find it on the internet. Should I get a pair of standard plates (aluminium?), or just leave the existing ones on?

To be honest if you are happy with the way they look leave them as they are, you could disconnect the other so neither illuminate.

IMHO I'd have a quick check that power is getting to the sill trim and see if you can get them working. If not, just leave them and save money and effort as they look better than standard eve if not illuminated

That's what I think. You can't really see the difference at daylight, and I only see it when I get in and out the car in the dark. Because I just bought the car a week ago, I expected everything working.

Did you buy it from a BMW dealer? If so, it sounds like they're being wriggly to me. They would sell you a car with not everything working and not tell you and that's acceptable? I don't think so.

I've found my local stealer much less inclined to put right issues like this of late.

You can really check it in the dark, and I don't think accessories fitted is one of the AUC checklist. I did not know the car is fitted with the illuminated door sills until I drove it after work last Monday.

Or I may fit the ///M Door Sill Finishers. :)

You're being very generous to them I think. If they'd sold me a car on which not everything was fully functional, and not told me (the implication being they'd not checked everything, or had done so but chosen not to mention it) I'd be pretty miffed.

I'd have another friendly word with the saesman and ask whwther he thought a less than perfect car was acceptable. Nothing to lose.

Finally I have ///M Door Sill Finishers fitted today. They are free as the illuminated panel on driver side did not glow. The BMW dealer was going to replace them with another pair of illuminated one (retrofit kit over £300), but these ///M look better and cheaper (£60 each). My Z4 needs more ///M badges (3 only), 523i Sport used to have 6. :) The dealer was excellent because they could have done nothing after the sale was over. Highly recommended.

Now, the next possible and cheap modifications for my Z4 are Clear LED Brake Light and ZHP Gear Knob, before buying the new Z4. :)

If you're happy great and I'm glad to hear the dealer sorted it, but I'd have taken the £300 illuminated set sold them on here for £200 and purchased a pair of the M at £120 if I really wanted to change.

But I am not a technical person. First, I could not find any instructions from TIS about removing the door sill panel. Also, the service guy said the wiring is not removed from the general module, but is safely secured. I have no idea how to do all these.

Fair comment if you just want to take it in have it done and go

I can only assume the technician means they are crimped onto existing wires and bet he just cut them off somewhere out of sight
