Ignition switch

Hi all, having been experiencing non start issues ,and people suggesting changing the ignition switch on the ignition /steering lock/ barrel. Can someone talk me through the procedure to get to this and any pitfalls. Went for a new oe part as was a bit twitchy on fitting a s/h part as I want to be sure it is ok before I tackle the starter motor swap. Many thanks in advance.

Hopefully this might help:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=39797

Different make but Nissan Micras have same problem. Changed my daughters today with a pattern part from fleebay. The part looked exactly the same and fitted well. Spot on.

Ran through the video, looks not too bad , thank you for that , First dry day I will have a go at it. And report back

Hi again. well after ordering a new switch from Bmw, I today fitted it and exactly the same. Click ! ... NOTHING. But, at least that should have eliminated the switch.
So now to change the starter motor I bought a while back. was going to have a go myself as a local indy had quoted £300 to swap it. spoke to Paddock motors in Exeter who I have recommended on here in the past as they did me an inspection 2 for less than £550 including the vat. they will change the starter motor, supplied by me for £100 inc vat. so booked for Thursday this week. Thanks for the advice and video link re the ignition switch chaps, I will report back on Thursday as to how I got on.

I had none start issues when I first got the car - only did it when hot. Under warranty they insisted on changing the ignition switch twice. It didn't fix it.

I could tell when it wasn't going to start as I think the sport button light would flicker. I had a strong suspicion it was a dry joint in the ecu. After 12 months, and much badgering, they eventually swapped the ECU - hasn't done it since.

Well , after my visit to Paddock motors near Exeter , they again came up trumps for me, I drove up from cornwall on a dampish thursday morning, 75 miles in which I remembered why the mc is such a great car. I arrived as booked in for 11am, the tech’s were on teabreak so I waited anxiously ,wondering who would be working on my baby, as they came downstairs one by one I was hoping for an experienced guy and hopefully not an apprentice or newbie who may not have worked on a MC before. After ten mins , the boss came out to say he had 5 mechanics ogling my car, which felt good.
Then I was introduced to Jamie , a bmw tech with previous 20 years main dealer service, mild mannered and knowledgeable who put my mind at rest in discussing whether he would do it from the top, airbox and inlet on or off or from below etc etc . The boss then got the apprentice to run me down to the farmshop/ cafe a mile down the road to wait and have some lunch. An hour and a half later, I get the phonecall saying nearly ready and appretice would be 5 mins. A young bmw enthusiast with an E46 and a one series project in the making picked me up again.
Jamie explained to me that he replaced starter from above without taking off the airbox which is apparently possible if you kno w what you are doing. ( a member on here had said previously that this was the case.👍) True to their quote , my bill was £100 inc vat. I thanked them for their help and had another very enjoyable drive back to Cornwall.
So again I can confidently reccomend. PADDOCK MOTORS nr Exeter devon ,past Westpoint on the road to Sidmouth.
For their first class service, and attention to detail,( they did my tyre pressure alert and reset my clock and systems foc and without being asked)
PADDOCK MOTORS Oaklands Garage, Sidmouth Rd Nr Exeter EX5 2JJ 01395 232049 Excellent, Excellent , Highly Recommended.👍👍😁😁😁

Its an easy enough job to change the starter without airbox removal...

I have done a few,one being a member on here.

Suppose £100 aint bad for "darn sarf" prices..
