hi guys,

ive got my z4 listed on auto trader and my god i wish i hadnt bothered. had phone calls from dodgy agencies and lots of nigerian scammers. i would recommend ebay and pistonheads based on this and my last car sale - much as everyone one here suggested when i asked where to list my car a few months back.

auto trader isnt cheap either but id wish they would weed out these scammers. its easy to google their email addresses as you always find they use the same message all over the place. id like to think im quite savvy but i could see how people might fall for it. im off to see if there is a way to report these idiots to autotrader but i will never give them any money again.

on the up side posting on forums like this, classifed ads on ebay and pistonheads have been much more positive. currently window shopping for a new car, e39 528i sport hopefully

I had my old Z4 on autotrader. I used the telesafe option and didnt get any scammers call through, but eventually removed my email address for the amount of scam emails.

They all started the same way.

I am interested in your car, whats your final price and I will pay it

Is your car still for sale, I would like to buy it and will arrange collection

Always it was the two -- at the top of the email, and from a gmail account. Ebay worked for me, but it always amazed me when someone asks "whats your final price". Sure Ill tell you what the lowest I am prepared to sell for straight off.

I totally agree. Much as i didn't expect much from Ebay I have found them the best place to sell overall. The trouble I had when selling an Evo X was I wasn't sure if my valuation was correct. At least with ebay you get an idea by the views and the watchers that the car has had. Autotrader just seems archaic these days and it isn't exactly cheap. £8 to sell car on ebay or well over £30 on Autotrader? No brainer really.

I think in the past Autotrader was the only place to sell so you would naturally use them. Unless they change I don't think this will be the case for much longer as they don't do anything others don't do for alot cheaper. The crank emails I agree are a massive irritation aswell.

Have sold 3 cars on fleabay and bought two others. Fab place to bargain, barter & sift through the rogues, but loads of bargains to be had if you can show ur really serious & can suss out yr opposite number

Conversely I've bought and sold quite a few and never failed with Autotrader, last two sold on day one, with a buyer for a Mini Convertible commiting on the phone and arriving with cash the next day. I give spot-on descriptions, don't publish an email and use the telesafe option so have had zero scammers. Meanwhile ebay seems to be infested with time wasters and chancers failing to buy or trying to chip money off for spurious faults, to the extent that I've stopped selling on ebay because it soaks up so much time and effort.

And yet, there is always the opposite side of this.
I bought my car off of Autotrader. The guy had just listed it and I was the first caller/looker and I bought it. It is a great car, TOO!! So, the guy would think that Autotrader is great for him!!

Autotrader turned out to be full of scammers for me also, selling cars is a pain in the rear at the minute :x
Its just a waiting game  But on the up side now its now my turn to play hard ball when buying my Z4 with hard cash :driving:
