If you had 40k budget but want back seats..

Woots, it's all been said above. You need to have a good hard look at the cost of having a child - not to decide whether you want one, but to understand what you can / cannot afford. It is not obvious, and be very clear that Mrs Woots will NOT be satisfied with a budget approach to bringing up Wee Woots if you are in a position to have £40k spare for motors. And to be honest, neither should you be - unless you are very fortunate priorities and how you spend your money will change for about 20 years. Fact. And lecture over

We have a Honda Accord as the family shed - not glamorous or very attractive, but very nicely spec'd and as a Honda it is totally bullet proof. It is however a complete mess 90% of the time and has been for the 8 years we have had it pretty much. Lately it is covered in mud inside and out from carting rugby kit and a dirty child around at weekends.

If you can really afford to spend that £40k just on cars then get a practical family car for £10k, an M for fun, and keep the rest for the McLaren buggies etc. that (buy the way) you will also have great fun buying.

The thing with kids is that you'll want to strangle them often enough without adding 'constantly soiling Daddy's pride and joy' into the mix... It may just push you over the edge :D

I guess it's not so much just the buying though... the fun is modding it... fit a stubby to it, swap out the wheels and get rid of those bloody runflats for a start!

ahh you guys are so wise, goddamn you all!! :P
i know your right and yeah im not exactly in the position to throw away 40k on a car, i bloody wish, it was more of a "when im in tht position"
i think it may be a good idea to keep the zed for another year perhaps, then before the baby comes along but myself an m3 saloon or something....should be pretty cheap by then, and its a good compromise between fun and family-ness?
perhaps...
aaahhh joys of growning up hey!

I'd be inclined (in your situation) to keep the zed forever and buy a cheap runaround (rather than an M3) to transport the family. Live with it for a while once you have the baby and re-evaluate in a year or so once your finances are settled. I believe you will find that a lot of the money has to go on the baby, but if not then go for it.

Ok, this is a bad example, but we moved house and I was saving for an electric double garage door... saved and saved and when I has enough we got the bathroom re-done instead. The garage door seemed important at the time but priorities change. I still want to get it done, but can live without for the time being while I get my sh*t together. I think this may be a bit like your situation... you may find that while things are a little lean money-wise you could actually do with a cheap runaround and the zed... that's more than a lot of people with kids have :)

Anyway, despite some of your crazy posts I actually am pretty sure you know very well what you're doing and whatever happens you will make the right choice
