Idrive Update Issue (solved)

Firstly let me say, I am no genius when it comes to anything to do with computers:

So I went on the BMW update site, put in my vin, and there is an update, that deals with some Bluetooth and various connection issues with the phone, perfect I think, as I do sometimes have an issue connecting my phone to stream music, so, I downloaded it, went to my downloads, there it was, it apparently is a bin file :? and is only 8700kb, so not a big file, I then copied it to my usb stick (64 gig and fat32) plugged it my car, went to software updates on drive, clicked on usb,,,, and it says there is no usb and no software available,,

I have tried several times with no luck,, so am I doing something wrong?

Also I noticed the BMW telephone update option on the idrive, would that work?

Keep any answers in layman terms please,,

Do you have 2 usb ports one in glove box and one in arm rest I think,
If so I think it has to go in a certain one

Yes, sorry forgot to mention that, I did plug it in the glove box one as I believe that where its supposed to go,, but I have tried both

Did you start the car? I recently did the update, I believe I had the car running and had no issues with the update.

Sorry about that ☹️

The only difference was I used a 32GB USB drive???

(Clutching at straws here!)

Much appreciated Prof  it was worth a go, I have searched the net, re formatted the usb, thrown rune sticks, think I might end up at the Indie, just I feel a bit of a numpty going to them for something so trivial

I dint think it can read a 64gb stick. When I updated my sat nav I was told to use 2x 32Gb drives.

Are you sure the stick is formatted as FAT32? Unsure what OS you are using but Win10 will insist on formatting anything over 32GB as NTFS... Double check it's FAT32 and try the USB port under the arm rest. Also you need the engine running but it should tell you this during the update process.
Hope that helps!

I did the same yesterday in the x5, used a 32gb stick formated to fat32 in the armrest USB (I have one in the glovebox too) engine was off and update took about 2 mins.. Now have track info when streaming Deezer via Bluetooth.

Hi thanks for your help, Yes it is formatted to FAT 32, at least that what it says under its properties (in fact I have tried two, one is 64gig the other 16gig), plugged them in both the armrest and glovebox, had the engine running. balanced on one leg,,,, I am loading it off windows 10 tho, Im at a bit of loss with this, as I have tried everything, its probably something stupid I am missing

Does it detect a USB stick in the arm rest socket if it has music on it? Another thing to try, I seem to remember mine was a bit slow to detect the USB stick and that I had to back out to the main screen, the go back into the update software screen before it would pick up the USB stick, if that makes sense, maybe give it 60 seconds or so after plugging it it then from the main menu navigate back to the software update screen.

Edited to add I also used Win 10 so I don't think that's the problem.

With mine I had to use 2 x 32Gb stick formatted fat32. It wouldn’t read anything bigger. It took a while to show that it could read the sticks, maybe over a minute. That’s in a 2009 35i with only a usb in the glove box, nothing in the centre console.

Well, I thought it would be something stupid, I had a new USB stick with just the files it came with, security etc, I deleted those and hey presto! it worked, I am assuming, because I tried three different ones, the USB has to be empty except for the update file, but anyway it worked :D

Thanks for all your help, much appreciated
