iDrive screen motor

Does anyone know how to have the screen permanently stay open (i.e. open even when ignition off and key is out)?

I was thinking if there was a fuse I could pull out to deactivate the motor, other than that I can only think of perhaps attaching a clip at the front or use some super-glue to stick on a plastic dowel at the lower side to jam it. Any other ideas guys?

Thanks!

Ok guys this is what I did: Forced it open a few times by hand, then forced it to stay open when taking the key out a few times. Now it won't move at all, down or up — I probably burned out the motor.

I wanted it to stay up because I found the winding up noise annoying every time I got in.

If it now makes no noise when it should, probably motor, if it still makes a noise an doesn't move, probably stripped teeth on gear

Never mind it 'fixed' itself, screen works as normal.

I attached a furniture leg grip (very small less than 1 cm diameter) on the side. It works as a screen jammer and surprisingly it works well, the motor must have very little torque.

Why would you do that?
You could have and still may have damaged something that no doubt costs a fortune to fix.
Maybe it would have been better to buy a model without nav if the noise was going to annoy you that much.

Little bit of silicone spray probably would of solved your noise problem.
Don't understand what you wanted to achieve by forcing a moving part.
:headbang:

The noise the roof makes when it opens annoys me so I'm going to jam clothing pegs into the mechanism to fix it :)

Is it me !! or did bmw design the screen to go up and down with the ignition , just program button 1 on the radio controle too operate the open/close mechanism !

Well its your car/money but have to to say its this sort of thing that makes me disregard the option of buying used cars

That's an idea, use a Troll.
Get the little fellow to squeeze between the gap to the right of the screen and jam a little pick axe in the gears, that should do it!

Seriously though it's funny how things like this noise and action become annoying after a while.
There should have been an option to switch off the auto opening of the screen.
Designed to open almost like an advert.
Just wonder how long that motor will last.

My daily ritual Summer;
Remove car cover (have to park under tree) , unlock, open boot, check roof protector set, close boot, open door, sit down, fasten seat belt, key in, foot on clutch, start, press button 8 to close screen, press sport to prevent cold judder pulling away, quick squirt washer on screen to get rid of overnight sap that got through cover on windshield (as lights are left on auto not squirt too much or else headlight washer activate, last mistake using Halfords purple washer fluid that stains bonnet!), lower roof, wait for rpm to drop to slow tick over, check hair in mirror, then go.
