iDrive firmware update via OBD? No USB in armrest

Hi all,

Tried to update the maps on my 09 Z4 as theyre from 2009 and was told (after buying) that the firmware needs updating first. Annoyingly, I have no USB interface in the armrest so cannot do it that way. I have an ethernet to OBDII cable I used to code my old i3 using BMW E-Sys and ISTA if that helps?

I assume I need to update it via obd or some other way? I tried searching for this but seems hard to find anything helpful but maybe I missed something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Should be a USB in the glove box no? Also OTA updates worked for me, and then did maps via usb.

I can't find an option for software update? So I assume I dont have OTA updates?

There is a USB in the glovebox but I read that glovebox is for map updates, arm rest one is for firmware updates. When I searched the vin on BMW website it didn't give me a file and said updates were only supported on specific versions (I think). I can verify later but I'm sure it was something like that.

The 2009 E89 won’t update the maps via the USB in the glove box without a firmware upgrade. As far as I am aware in can’t be done through the USB in the armrest. To update by USB your system must have the tick over the “i” as per the picture below. For this reason I updated my 2009 E89 with 3 x DVDs.

Where did you get the update and the DVD's from??

I’m sorry I can’t help. I live in France for 6 months of the year and don’t have the details of where I purchased them from with me. I’m not back in the UK untIl the end of this month which I guess will be too late for you.
