New car vanos marathon underway- touch wood so far so good

Views on the play in this idler please: worth changing?

I’ve had a noise on idle that I though was water pump (being changed anyway) but this had more movement and play than others

That looks wobbly. OEM is made by INA iirc and feels sturdier than some of the cheaper rivals. There’s also a nice INA belt tensioner mechanic to hydraulic upgrade, while you’re there :wink: On a serious note, I was also hunting a belt whine (usually the first minute after startup) and after replacing all pulleys found out it was the tensioner getting tired. The hydraulic one replaced the mechanic in bmw catalogs, is sturdier and pulls more constantly, I believe.

To change the idler wheel is it a torx in the face bolt turned clockwise?

Torx with normal thread. I remember the torques were hard to find, 42 Nm from memory. That’s the tensioner pulley, isn’t it? I couldn’t find the roller sold separately when doing mine.
