Idle Bounce, Drop & Stall

Hi had the same problem of idle bouncing and nearly stalling, it was the MAF. I cleaned mine but no joy, didn't throw any faults but bought a new one and it solved the problem. Also had similar symptoms when installing supercharger kit, this was a loose inlet hose.

Hi Mac,

Disconnecting it should cure the issue though, as the car uses a different fueling map with the MAF disconnected i believe. In my case it made no difference. Did yours run ok with the MAF plug removed?

Had recovery come collect the car and take to the garage on Sunday. Took him hours of messing, wanting to retest it and using planks to get it up onto the towing platform (front wheels). He also sheered off the bolt from the negative terminal on the battery lead. (£20 to replace the cable from BMW!)

So, after getting the car to the garage, they charged the battery again and started diagnosis.

After getting it to start (said it struggled) and keeping it idling, they couldn't find any faults either. It was heavily fueling so smoking and smelling of petrol. After 10mins of keeping it idling at 1000-1500rpm it sorted itself out and idled fine. They took it for a drive and it drove perfectly. They couldn't find what caused the issue as there are no faults stored, so like me was unsure what the issue was as all of the items I replaced should in theory have thrown an error or EML if they'd failed. They cold tested it a couple more times and it started and idled fine each time so seems one of the things I'd done has cured the problem and the fueling has sorted itself out.

They carried out a battery test and a drain test on it to see why that repeatedly drained and again all clear.

So that being well, the Vanos seal kit arrived today so I dropped it at the garage to be swapped with some other preventative work. List so far:

Replace Rocker gasket, Vanos seals & bolts, both pulley belts, water pump (metal impeller), vanos thermostat & housing, update ECU software, battery cable, along with the above diagnostic work is currently around £650. They're going to re-quote on the water pump as they had a BMW price which is 3x higher than the most expensive one on ECP. Same for the belts, quoted £70 but on ECP they're £18 for the pair.

They are going to send me some pictures of the rear flexible brake lines as they say they're corroded. I've recently had the front to rear (copper) lines replaced but these are not copper lines apparently, although he quoted £170. Gut feeling is that's too expensive as I've had braided lines fitted and new F/R copper lines, so not sure what else there is to replace :!:
