Identify sensor?

I've been giving my sons newly acquired 2004 3.0l an oil sevice and noticed that a sensor seems to have broken off.
There are two of these at the front of the engine underneath the cylinder head and the one nearest the oil filter is the item in question.
The sensor part attached to the loom seems to have snapped off its mounting. It has a metal clip to hold it in place
I think its something to do with the cooling system but its difficult to tell.
Looked on RealOEM but can't spot it.
Have taken a couple of pics but can't see how to post them....
Can anyone help please?

my guess would be a knock sensor, but that's just a logical guess as there are two, and one is located on/near the manifold which is where you are describing?

try realoem - http://www.realoem.com

Try a google imagine search and you might be able to confirm the connection you have would fit a knock sensor in it? google image search - clicky

For imagine hosting:

use http://www.photobucket.com or http://www.imageshack.com, then take the address it gives you ( for example http://www.photobucket.com/mypicture.jpg) and add tags either side.

example:

Did some more exploring this morning and its the thermostat sensor.
The thermostat housing had broken leaving the sensor dangling by its loom.
Just replaced the housing - £56 from BMW.
A real sod to get at, even after removing the radiator shroud but managed it eventually.
