Ideas for car for a new driver

My better half has her driving test next week. I have convinced her that the Z4 is under no circumstances an ideal car for her to drive as a first car (whew).

I am looking for ideas regarding a solid first car for a new driver. Not working with a huge budget so new is out of the window (say £3.5k). I have singled out a Peugeot 206 as a potential thus far (pretty good looking, low insurance, i'm guessing prettty reliable judging by the numbers still on the road)

Your recommedations please.

can't go wrong with a golf, good solid cars

That would have been the preferred choice but high residuals and im assuming higher insurance premiums would probably push over the budget

less chance of breaking down and better resale value so it may balance out

a 1.9 diesel would be very nice first car

I bought a VW Polo for 4k for my daughter, as a new driver £700 insurance not bad either.

My first car was a Yaris 1.3. I loved it.

Its solid, looks are debatable.., insurance was low for me. I wouldn't overlook it :D

LMAO I have opened up a can of worms with a VW Golf. Apparently its not a "pretty" car. I said that you shouldnt go just on looks and she said "well you bought a Z4 for that reason". I cant argue against that :!:

yaris is ok, i bought my daughter 1
For a £3.5k budget I'd be looking at:
Toyota Yaris
Toyota Aygo / Citroen C1 / Peugeot 107 (all same car and built by Toyota, so ignore Frenchness on this occasion)
VW Polo
Skoda Fabia (previous shape)
Seat Ibiza
Would £3.5k get an early MINI One?

Do NOT under any circumstances buy a Nissan Micra :poke:

clutch on my daughters C1 fecked at only 36k miles from new......

But C2 1.4 diesel is cheap, economical and funky.....

Cheers for the ideas and keep them coming. Im still pushing for a Golf TDI or a Seat of similar size. Just got to get past the "they are not pretty" comments.

I notice not one comment for a 206? I know French cars are not renown for being reliable but there are an awful lot of them still on the road suggesting they possible buck the trend?
