Putting a new (old) head unit in my z4 with the basic speaker set up,have put some 6.5" speakers in the rear cubbys and was thinking of putting new bigger ones in there. In such a small car I was thinking of not connecting the front speakers and connecting the front and rear outputs from the radio ( 4x45w) to just the rear speakers creating a basic stereo non fading set up. Would this work OK?
 
Why would you want to?

The sound should come from the front, put a decent set of 3 way comps in the front doors/footwells and that will be better than any rears at all :)
 
You don't go to a concert with the speakers are behind you Goon. Basic sound staging, get the best sound you can from the front and forget the rear. However with a basic set up and 4x45w head unit I'd power some good quality 3 way fronts in the doors, 3 way in the rear below the head rests for some sound fill, then add a slim sub amp combo for behind one of the seats to add some bass. They're not overly expensive and provide some decent bass. You'll struggle to power component speakers without an amp so quality 3 ways can work very well.

Oops sorry hopz121, I was writing my reply when you posted yours, I didn't see it.
 
Was just looking for an easy option really don't want to rip door cards off and mess about with amps if necessary.

Door cards are an easy job buddy, get some plastic trim removal tools and a decent set of speakers and your in business.

I wouldn't bother touching the rears if I'm honest

nope won't work.
just the 2 rear feeds will be sufficient.

putting larger then 6,5" speakers in the rear cubby's will not fit (maybe 7x5 if you are lucky). best thing to do is put a 6.5" in the footwell, tweeter in the door, and a 6.5' coax in the rear cubby. in that case you can fade front to back, have high tones both front & rear + a decent low end.

i personally have a Focal PS165 3-way compo with crossovers in the front, and never "looked" at the rears ever since
 
Yes I think the door trims will have to come off, I think some people have just inserted speakers into the door holes without amping and running cables back to the HU,hope I can get away with this as I have a pair of kenwood 4" dualmag speakers from my old Audi in the drawer.
 
Surprised you want a rear soundstage it will sound unnatural (it might be useful if you fancy a go on the panel of "the voice"). I have just picked up a 2005 Z4 and the first thing I have done is faded the stereo 80/20 to the front, in standard set up there is just too much directional sound from behind my ears for my liking, it just sounds wrong.

I am also keen to upgrade the audio, but I am looking to fit the largest speakers possible behind the seats without making the car look awful to enhance the bass, but I would be fitting a low pass filter because I don't want directional sound from behind me.

I assume the standard head unit does not have a preamp output.
