IAM Speed Limit Poll

Very slow, and yes, unrestricted voted and I seem to be in the minority ... :o

After a high speed trip in Germany last week, on narrower roads with frequent slip roads on and off, it is amazing that in the UK we can not have the same.

Never driven in Germany but a few years back our neighbour to the south (Montana) had no speed limits. I believe the term was "reasonable and prudent". It was great tootling down the Interstate at 90 or 100mph and not getting worried, the problem was that on the back roads there was no limit either and the locals kept getting wiped out. They would pull out into the lane the same way they had been doing for 20 years and get smoked by someone doing 85 (the average speed on these roads at the time). The limits came back on, 75 on the freeways and 65 on most of the back roads.

The way things are on the roads these days in the UK I seriously believe that, unless you do track days and suchlike, its utterly pointless having a car that does any more than 100mph frankly.

Had my say! The last question was an interesting one! 'what's the fastest you have ever driven on uk roads?' 70 obviously! :)

I put a figure much higher than 70mph, but then I've driven on the Isle of Man and has good few unrestricted roads (although you will still get done for dangerous driving if you get caught taking the pee).

The new widened stretch of the M1 near Nottingham is just being fitted out with speed cameras where the speed limits is controlled.

I would be happy for every motorway mile to be controlled and enforced this way if the speed limit was governed by the prevailing conditions. Such that heavy rain/congestion/fog ecetera the limit would be 50 or so but at 2 am when there is bugger else on the road it was 100

and the resultant press release:

Is 80 the new 70?

More than 70 per cent of drivers and riders think that the UK motorway speed limit should be increased by at least ten mph, according to an IAM poll of over 2000 people.

Not only do people feel that the limit should be higher, almost 60 per cent say they would be more likely to stick to an 80mph limit than they are to the current limit of 70mph.

Nearly 60 per cent of people also admitted to travelling above 70 mph when traffic is free-flowing and uncongested, with 20 per cent of those travelling at 80 mph or faster. The survey reflects the latest DfT research of free-flowing motorway speeds, which found that 52 per cent of cars exceeded the 70 mph speed limit and 16 per cent travel at 80 mph or faster.

IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig said: “Even though motorways are the safest roads, increasing the motorway speed limit is a controversial subject. This is why we want to see a trial to test its impact on road safety, fuel consumption and driver behaviour.

“A new 80 miles per hour limit would need to be properly enforced to make sure that it does not become an excuse to drive at 90.”

“Shortening journey times for people travelling at quieter times, as transport secretary Philip Hammond suggests, is a good idea, providing it doesn’t have a negative effect on safety.”

Pretty pointless as to all intents and purposes its already 80mph. Not only would the police not bother stopping anyone doing 80 - as has been admitted in several quarters - but thats backed up by ACPO guidance on speeding prosecution which is only if speed exceeds LIMIT + 10%+ 2MPH.

So an 80mph limit would effectively mean 90 if that guidance remained in place.

Seems like a lot of effort to me for no result other than a message to the government that they can probably safely leave it as is. In these days of lower fuel supply/higher prices I can't see anyone raising speed limits frankly, hence my earlier post. :?

Fuel costs probably indeed. I was in Germany a few weeks back and normally traffic flows fast. This time, when cruising at 150+, there was not a single car anywhere near the speeds I was doing, whilst in the past I there would still be other cars around doing similar speeds.

They were probably worried about the L-plates. :poke:

Spain lowered their speed limits on their motorways from 130kph to 110kph: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12663092

So I doubt the UK will increase theirs to 80mph unfortunately...

LOL....from "suicide level" to "kiss of death" then......

Even in France, worst lorry drivers on the road are Portugese followed by Spanish.....their mirrors don't seem to see what the rest of us see... :headbang:
