So what was the right path for you then?

we loved holidaying in france & bought first property there 11 years ago & then bought another & another & now halfway through renovating another which is planned to be our "get out of britain" house as soon as our children are financially capable of providing for themselves ?????????????????????
yield wise france still offers much better returns per pound rental wise than uk but beware the trap if you have to sell :evil: massive taxes if the property is not your permanent home & you are a french tax payer :thumbsdown:

Yeah, I'm up to date on CGT and how to avoid with PRR and letting relief. Government just can't get enough of taxing you can they

Not read all the thread but IMO pensions are rubbish, there is always a third party getting their cut plus the government change the 'goal-posts' all the time further eroding the pension.

I've never contributed a single penny to any private pension scheme I've always considered them a rip-off.

Knowing my luck if I buy another place, the market will go down even more...

Never made any profit on the two previous houses I have owned. The first one I had to pay to get out as the mortgage was more than the value of the house (1993), the second one I sold for £40k more than I paid for in 1999 (but had spent about £75k on).

My current house I know is worth more than what I paid for, but that is not because I bought the right house - but bought the house coincidently in a location where the land that comes with it has gone up in value.
