I want more noise

I wondered what people would recommend to get a bit more growl out of the M engine, especially at lower revs.

Either induction kits or exhausts? I've seen the Gruppe M, but can't get over the price tbh. Are there cheaper alternatives?

I had two systems on the TT. First a cat back Magnex with 4" tailpipes which was great around town but very droney at motorway speeds. Following this I had a full 3" blueflame system from turbo back which gave a deep growl at low revs pulling away, but wasn't unbearble at higher revs either. I also had an induction kit etc on the TT.

I'm after something similar to give it a bit more growl.

Not after performance gains as long as it's not going to lose performance.

Have a root about, there's a few threads about exhausts for the 'M'. RPI is awesome but too loud for everyday use really, the H & S system seems a good compromise and I like mine which was custom made by Longlife Exhausts. They all drone at certain revs, mine's reasonable on the motorway but loud when you get up the rev range.

The rpi is sooooo loud it actually makes my eye lids vibrate.

The drone is so bad, i physically hurts at times..... N no im not joking.
But i love it!!!

Sounds like Remus is the way to go for you. Zero drone and a nice growl noticeably more than stock. The way the Z4MC should have sounded to begin with

A cheaper alternative to Gruppe M is the Simota carbon intake system, around £250 or so. There's a few clips on you tube of them fitted to Z4's, and I've posted on here about them before. Have a search for "Simota"... :)

I decided to forego an aftermarket exhaust and just stick with a Gruppe-M. You really cannot beat induction noise IMO. I know they are expensive, but at least they resale high if you ever want to get rid...

You're welcome to have a quick passenger ride in mine at the PH meet if you've never heard one before but think "CSL" if you've ever been in one.

Another intake option is AFE one. It's not carbonfibre like the GruppeM but it's like half the price and reports say it sounds just as good.

How was the fitting - and secondly, insurance impact?

Fitting: piece of cake, Brystone did it for me  .

Insurance costs me an extra £53/year for CSLs, Gruppe-M and aero side skirts but they're not covered if the car is nicked etc. Just more that they're "allowed", which is fine by me I'll take that risk.

My current insurer says a point-blank "no" to anything affecting the engine, hence me probably changing insurer at the end of my current policy.

I asked Tim @ Chris Nott about adding something like a Gruppe M / airbox system and he's quoted a maximum 5% policy loading: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=7451&start=195#p331255. I could live with that depending on the intial policy price compared to what I'm quoted elsewhere.

(off topic)Which insurer Playa?
My quote is up 50% (cheers Adrian Flux) so I'm looking for alternatives that are mod friendly...

Admiral. I made sure with the Gruppe-M that I fully explained exactly what it is and what it does. The call-centre chappy went off for a good 5 - 10 minutes before he came back with the verdict so I'm confident it was all properly checked before they gave it the OK.

or you could get one of these:

It will make your car sound like a Ferrari V12, not sure if you'd need to declare it on the old insurance as well though :?

Have you guys tried insurance brokers instead if places like directline. Mine is still insured through A Plan who used to insure the TT which had loads of mods. I can recommend them.

EDIT: Plug in V12 thing is very funny lol

Will have a look at AFE and Simota carbon, and if I catch you next Sunday I'd love to hear the gruppe M, even though I'm a crap passenger.

Need to sort wheels first. Will look at this after that.

Told the wife I wouldn't mod this one. :headbang: It needs wheels though. And a stubby. And that H&S exhaust sounds good. lol

Found a few clips of the RPI, sounds like the world is ending. lol

I love it.
