I want a Z4

Hi everyone...

I am new to this forum and just wanted to ask a few questions... Firstly i would like to introduce myself... Im a 25 year old male who would like to buy a Z4.... currently, im driving a 330ci and have had this car for almost 2 years.. Ive always wanted a Z4 but never found the right time to buy one.. and now i think it is the right time..

Having had the 3.0ltr straight six from the 3 series coupe, i already know the joys of the sound and the power... although i do understand that with the face lift Z4, there is a power increase... I dont think i could afford a newer one..

I just wanted to know what they are like to drive.... have been to all the BMW showrooms in my within a 15 miles radius of my area, and to my amazement they have NO Z4 3.0ltrs at all...

What are the 2.5's like? can you notice a difference in power?? whats the ride like?? running costs?? and most importantly, does anyone regret getting one??

thank you for your time..

kind regards

Never drove a 2.5 so I can't compare but there are a ton of folks here who love them. Good luck with the search and Welcome!

Welcome to the forum

I bought the first car I saw and drove. Didn't even consider the 2.5 so can't compare.

Love every minute of the car :D

Know what you mean about the dealers not having ANY.... my local dealer doesnt have any at all. Can only assume they are not getting any in because of the upcoming new version and potential difficulty selling the older ones :idunno:

Happy searching - You have come to right place for advice

I can help you out here!!
I went from a 330i to a 2.5 Z4. (bought the zed in Jan).
Prior to the 330, I had a 2.8 Z3.

In my opinion there is not a lot of difference between the 330 and the 2.5 Z4, even though the 330 has 231bhp and the zed 193bhp. With the extra 300 kilo weight on the saloon the power to weight ratios are similar and the 0-60mph times are similar.

The only marginal difference I have found is that if you go for a real spirited drive. Taking it up to the red line in 2nd and 3rd!! You will have to change up to 3rd and 4th respectivley a few mph on the clock earlier than in the 330.

But in normal driving, no difference at all. Exactly the same purr from the straight 6.

k1983, welcome to forum.

Best advise I can give you in order to facilitate a detailed reply to the questions you pose is to do a search. Button middle of the page above.

There are a number of threads considering the questoins you ask in depth and the particular engine question has been discussed recently.

hey guys thanks a lot for taking the time to read and reply to my post... also, do you think that with the new Z4 just around the corner, will it have a significant affect on second hand prices?

Welcome and good luck searching

I don't think the new Z4 will affect prices much, aside the very new models. the recession has already taken it's toll on sports cars and infact if anything I'd expect Spring and Summer to firm prices up a little.

I had the 2/5i roadster for about 18 months, i liked the car, nippy to drive, lacked power( i had twin turbo toyota supra before that), the punch, was ok on economy. But TBH mate i would go for 3.0lt engine cause of better power, almost equal economy and suppose not much difference in insurance. I changed mine to an M roadster and never regret doign that. But as long as i had the 2.5 i felt it just lacked that extra power when u needed it. I would suggest u drive them both and decide. better to take it for a longer run preferably country roads/motorway if possible. wouldnt know much if u go one of those shorter recession test drives. its useless. if the insurance is the same on near same on both I would go for 3.0lt.
cheers and good luck.

I bought my 2.5i Sport almost 2 months ago. Some people say its handling is better because of the lighter engine. I will go for 2.5si, which has Driving Dynamic Control and more bhp. 2.5i can get from 0-62mph in 7.1sec. All you need is facelift model with xenon headlights. :)

Bought my first Z4 3 weeks ago and do not regret it. I tried the 2.5 and did not think it really had the power i wanted and hated the steering. I too had problems finding a 3.0 and made the mistake of trying the M and loved it, you can pick some good deals up on the M, higher running costs but to me it was definetly worth it.

I think those suggesting better handling are referencing the 2.0, which as a 4 cylinder is a much smaller and lighter engine. I doubt the 2.5 to 3.0 is any different in engine weight (they are only 25kg different in total and much of that will be the wheels and tyres) facelift quoted. The 2.0 is 95kg lighter than the 3.0Si

i have an 05/2.2se,its got more welly than thats needed by anyone,
ride very harsh, but if u avoid the potholes, its sent by god.

wee bit greedy to run and own,but hey-you only liv once

worth the gamble.

just cant seem to find one with the right spec and right price..... its so hard... think i will go for a 3ltr, but finding one to test drive will be difficult as there are none in my area! its such a shame! i do like the grey one very much.... had a grey on a mini cooper s i owned a while back... but black for me would be a preference!
