I think i've decided

Hi all. My name is Aaron. I'm from Melbourne Australia. I'm 24. I have an E39 M5. I bought it 2 years ago. Coming out of a E32 740iL

Now. My girlfriend is getting a bit pissed off at me recently because I can't make up my mind on what car I want next.

I've gone from... keeping the E39 M5, buying a caterham and getting an E38 7 series.

To getting an E36 M3 track car and keeping the M5 and the company car.

To selling the M5 and getting a 1M.

Considering getting an E46 M3.

To now.... over the last few days. (this is the first time i've made a forum post about the car I want)

I think I've narrowed it down to a Z4m Coupe. There's 3 for sale in my country. All black.

basically, I'm here for you guys to convince me to get one. My primary goal is to have a nimble car. It's a weekender. I'm somewhat of a crazy mofo behind the wheel and I want to be able to take my car to the track and be competitive. My regular track visit in the M5 is winton raceway. It's rather corner orintated with some nice straights. I find I'm often competing against the likes of Honda's running semi slicks against my fat M5 wallowing through the corners and taking up half the track while going sideways.

Let me get this straight. I don't care if the car is uncomfortable. I want a raw driving experience. If I get a Z4m coupé. It'l be with with hard springs, fat wheels and straight pipes. Maybe a turbo later on. I don't want something I'm going to get bored of like I do sometimes with the M5. I want a car that will sometimes want to kill me. To feel alive you know?

Anyway. I've worked it all out. Cars are expensive here in Aus. an E39 M5 pulls any where between 30-45k a Z4M hovers between 40-60. It's affordable. but is a feasible? I don't want to feel like I'm making a mistake.

you can never make a mistake with a BMW, let alone a Z and let alone an M.

I have the 3.0SI coupe which is plenty fast so matched with an E46 M3 while the Z4M is close run speed to an M3 CSL.
Don't know about Turbocharging but you can supercharge although you'll need deepish pockets but have a search on the forum for supercharged Z4M.

Now thats a tough ask right there.
Good luck in your decision M5Aaron. Look forward to hearing what you end up with.

Aaron, I've been in the market for me second Z4 lately and on the weekend just had a test drive of a Z4M. I simply couldn't justify the cost and insanity for a daily driver, but by the sounds of it a Z4M is exactly what you want! The car is an animal and immensely fun to drive. The cockpit layout is perfect, controls are so natural to use. A real driver's car. The power and acceleration put an enormous grin on your face and handling/braking is superb.

Black is unfortunately pretty much the only available colour or the small number of Z4Ms here. The odd one comes up in another colour, but it's rare :(

Suspension is very firm and some people on here recommend fitting KW Coilovers to improve both track handling and street comfort (cost is about $3.5-4k landed).

I haven't heard of anybody turbocharging a Z4M, but there are a few who supercharge. I know somebody who was looking at doing it and the cost was around $10k.

You'd be silly not to get one. Here's a pic of mine to tempt you....

Thanks for all the replies.
I'm definitely not interested in steering away from BMW and could not picture my self driving a jap car. My M5 is not by any means slow. It's still very competitive with most modern cars. It's biggest let down for me personally is that even when it's most alive it still feels a little dull.

I've been making a bit of enquiry on M coupes as well. Although I would much rather the Z4m. I think I will soon be advertising my car for sale. Looking for around 30k. Which is less than pretty much anything in Aus as I just want to get rid of it quickly. I'll update from time to time on my sale and hopefully my purchase. Won't be happening over night but if all goes to plan I look forward to being a more active member on here.

When I bought my M I went from buying a GTR, contract signed, money down, to driving a cayman, an '08 M5, and then took the M for a spin and settled on it almost instantly..

Why? despite being half the price of the M5 or GTR, it was much more enjoyable in the real world, some minor mods mean I enjoy it every time I Go out, the pops the intake roar, the scream, I love it.

I've only just been considering selling it as I promised a long time ago myself a 360 or 911 before my next birthday, but funnily enough, putting it up for sale made me realise what I loved about it, and now I'm thinking of supercharging it (again, ordered a ton of parts a while back and convinced myself it wasn't the way to go!) and getting a tracker on the side. I'm biased, but I love the smile the M puts on my face every time I get in..

"I want a raw driving experience."

I already was pretty sure this was your car, but that statement clinched it. Go make a deal, and post a crapload of pics here when you get her home.

Good to see another Aussie member!

If you want a raw driving experience then the Z4M is for you, I guess finding a coupe in Oz for a test drive is not so easy. I bought mine unseen (but with inspection report) from Sydney and had it trucked over to Perth. The only research I had done was to sit in a 3.0 coupe to see if there was enough headroom!

Fortunately the raw driving experience is to my taste....it can be difficult to find M coupes to test drive (I have only ever seen 4 coupes and never seen a roadster!) I hope the limited choice here does not put you off from making a great purchase! If you are ever in Perth.....
