I shouldn't let them wind me up !!

Went in to my local BMW garage to pick up a part I'd ordered a couple of days ago - the salesman ( or sales director as they like to be known ) wandered out and was eyeing up my zed - this is the same bloke who was trying to sell me a 2004 2.2 for nearly £11k a few weeks ago - asks me what I paid for it and if it had a full BMW service history - at this point I could see what was coming and should of drove off! He then told me without a full BMW service history the value of such cars drops like a stone and his car had a much better spec ! My car is a 3 litre SE with 13k less miles and despite having only one non BMW service stamp (with 2 BMW stamps from new ) my car looks in far better nick and cost £2k less. I fully appreciate the value of a full BMW service record especially with a newer car but there are many fully competent indies out there and surely each car is individual anyway and its value really is its condition and how well its been looked after particularly older ones.

You are quite right. Don't let them push your buttons. Remember that the major portion of a dealers income is derived from used car sales and service. If you don't currently own a vehicle with maintenance and service coverage you should never even talk to a salesman.

I do agree that without any service record I would be wary - my car came from a main dealer garage ( albeit non BMW ) with all the usual documentation that included a service book ,receipts, old mot's etc - despite its low mileage ( 29k ) all the mot history and service stamps tally up - the first 2 services were done by a main BMW garage , the last one ( inspection 1 ) was done by a sports Car Specialist .

Anyway I've calmed down now - ( honestly !! )

Lol you have got to love then haven't you, your car is 7 years old, the mileage and fitted options list has more relevance to saleability than FBMWSH.......unless of course you are going to trade it in with the dealer!

Too true, but don't forget the sale of 'extras'
Purchased another car last weekend (Jaguar) and the finance guy appeared with the paperwork for the sale and the price had gone up by £3,000. He'd added:

£699 - 12 months warranty - still has a few years of manufacturer warranty, but he could add to the end..
£1000 - Price insurance to return me to invoice price in case of loss
£400 - tyre insurance covering up to 6 tyres over 12 months. HA ha - I've had one flat in 10 years and could buy 2 new tyres!!
£600 paint shield - Did it have by the last customer - 'no' - then I don't need it
£400 Interior protection - as above

All declined, but what an earner for the dealers

As the last laugh he said to me everyone has a limited line of credit so I suggest we finance the car and you keep yours. He then proceeded to put a 6.5% flat rate deal on the table. Laugh - I nearly fell off my seat.

Dealers in the end were miffed as all they got was a cash sale for a car that is from 70 miles away so will never service it and their web offer that I raised means they pay my RFL for the next 3 years :)

I never let them wind me up

CJ, in your case it sounds like the salesman was the one being wound up :) good effort.

A good while back I went to look at a Mondeo ST200 in the local franchised dealer. The salesman was acting like an arrogant tool and wasn't taking me seriously (I look young for my age now, and did even more so back then). The car needed a fair bit of TLC - kerbed alloys, small dents/scratches etc. He wouldn't budge even one pound on the over-inflated price.
A month later when I'd bought one privately in considerably better condition and for much less, it needed a new key fob as the buttons had worn out. I couldn't help myself but to park it right under that salesman's nose while I went to the parts desk.

** PS to be fair and to balance this comment, I have met the occasional salesman who've seemed like decent people!

I should say in fairness the salesman was excellent at Jag. It was the finance guy that their process allowed to get into the loop and he assumed customers would do as told. Most people it seems are just after the car and to a monthy repayment so just gloss over and sign up for anything.

To be fair again my wife's car is a Fiesta which we bought new and the Ford garage we bought it from were really good - mind you they don't employ jumped up pushy salesmen - its a family run business. I went over to see the man who looked after my Lotus Elan this morning and he clearly knows all about BMW's and the z4 - he will look after it for me - his business specialises in peformance cars and he is able to reset and diagnose the computer settings and is a lot cheaper than BMW so hopefully I don't need to set foot in that place again.

I'm really chilled out now !!!!1

i had it years ago when far younger and wanted to buy a CLk convertible, line from salesman to me "bit of a pipe dream that aint it mate" i walked off laughing, went back a week later with my new car (bought elsewhere) and made sure he saw me, arrogant pr1ck

If it makes anyone feel any better you get the same over here in Australia. Most good and only some not so good.

The Porsche dealership (?!?!) I've just purchased my car from couldn't have been more polite, professional or helpful if they'd tried. A real pleasure to do business with leaving me with no buyers remorse  Although I guess the car helps alleviate that feeling

Yep buying my used Zed from Brisbane BMW was a pleasure. They couldn't do enough for me and made me feel like I was buying a brand new car. In contrast some of the used car yards I inquired with when searching were arrogant, sleazy yobbos who wouldn't give me the time of day.

Here is a photo of my new toy sitting on my drive - wheels not to everyone's taste but they are original and are beginning to grow on me!

Nice 106 turbines! :)

You're right, from what I've read/heard, the wheels are a bit 'marmite' - personally I like them! :P

For a 17" rim, they're not bad. I like them as much as I like the 103 daisies, they're both nice styles and they do suit the pre-facelift.
