I shopped a drink driver, should I have done?

You have done well sir!

You should also take a video (if you aren't the driver obviously) of people who are using their mobile phones while driving, (include the number plate) and send it to the police. The effects/results of texting and driving are similar to drink driving.

I doubt there'll be anyone on here that would say you did the wrong thing - including me, whether they (or I) would have done the same is another question.

Totally agree with everyone's thoughts on this especially Marlons. What you did was the correct thing to do and I hope I would have done the same. Not the easiest thing to have done as you are finding as we are all brought up "not to tell tales" but this women was endangering people's lives and needed a wake up call to herself and the people around her who may be able to support her change what would appear to be normal behaviour for her.

I did the same a couple of months back and reported a drunk driver whilst following them. They where all over the road, missing bends, nearly hitting oncoming traffic and mounting the pavements. Whilst the wife was giving a running commentary to the police with full details, they said to stop following them and leave it to then.
The following day I rang up the police with an incident number to see what had been done and was told no action had been taken...WTF!!!
If they had hit a person on the pavement and driven off, who would have reported it if we were not following ( this was at night, pubs closing, forgot to say ).
This made my blood boil!
So John, fair play to you, and it looks like your plod care, ours don't.

The hubby.

Good call  and you should feel good about your decision. Not beat yourself up at all. From what you described that woman was going to either get caught, or kill someone sooner or later. You did her and her daughter a massive favour. Doubt they appreciate that right now, but be certain that you did.

Wow I did'nt expect such a response!

Tbh I've been looking at the negatives of this and what I may have done to this woman but all the positive responses on here have drummed it home that it was the right thing to do. She was so canned it was amazing she could drive at all which makes me think it's not her first time, and sooner or later she'd hurt somebody. I hav'nt told many people about it, just the wife really, so I've been running it around my head and getting nowhere. Sometimes it's easier to tell strangers than close friends.

I've been bowled over by the very nice comments on here to a difficult call, it's 100% helped me be more at ease, so thank you all so much, I really really appreciate the time you've taken to post and any others that might do.

THANK YOU GUYS!!

Totally right

Spin the question on it's head, what if you didn't? by the sound of it she was literally an accident waiting to happen either then or any day soon with kids in the car.

Doing the right thing is often more difficult than turning a blind eye. 100% with you John

Not that this needs another stranger/weirdo to add to the above, but good on you. Absolutely the right thing to do.

I reckon on following someone who is obviously p!ssed (or letting their guide dog drive) about once per month. But by the time I find my phone, which doesn't work too well hands free, it's too late or too dangerous.

100% agree
2 years ago I was a couple of cars behind a car that was all over the road, changing their mind at the last minute at junctions etc.
I had no hesitation phoning plod (on the hands free), gave them the reg and they sent a car to intercept
Don't beat yourself up - think of what could have happened

Well done  How many people out there wished a Good Samaritan like you had rung the police and stopped a drunk driver that has in some way negatively effected their life.

Some people don't get a second chance,
So you definitely did the right thing, for her, her child and the possible poor unsuspecting victims of her next outing.

I wouldn't feel guilty about it. I've done it before and I would do it again. No excuse for it tbh.

It's not like they've been doing 80 in a 70, they've done something that could kill you, a member of your family, a friend. Wreck lives forever. You wouldn't trust a drunk person with a gun so why would you trust them with a car?

Sometimes, you should turn a blind eye to not following the law 100%.

This was obviously not one of those times.

Drink driving is stupid and completely avoidable
Taking a child with you also shows just how irresponsible that person is.

Even being that intoxicated around a child is irresponsible and sets a horrendous tone.

You did the right thing.
Only other thing you could have reasonably done is approached her in the car park and advised her of what she was doing, which unfortunately would have likely resulted in an unnecessary confrontation and potentially aggregated her and made even less capable of driving.
