For me, the coupe just looks so odd that I had to have one. I had a Z3 for a little while, and the wife and I are so pale that riding with the top down was pretty silly. Plus, here in the Southern part of the US, the humidity during the summer is so insane with 95 degree heat that having the top down is miserable.

Most people end up with a Coupe, because they think it looks amazing, not odd! If you like odd, I think you should be looking at driving one of these... And yes, it is cross-eyed :?Attachments

I can admit I definitely prefer the look of the coupé, but I love driving with the roof down, I'm that weirdo driving around in the winter with a massive coat on and the roof open, I thought about getting a hard top for the winter but based on the last few months I'd be taking it on and off every couple of weeks.

I don't think there is any rivalry really. A Z4 is a Z4, whether it is a coupe or convertible, E86 or E89, it doesn't really matter.
