After waiting since last Thursday to get a new tire from Tirerack I finally got a replacement for my brand spanking new winter tire that got mortally wounded last week.
As I mentioned in an earlier reply to someone else's post last week, I was highly impressed with the TPMS system in our cars. I first learned of what had happened when my inflation challenged icon lit up on my dashboard while driving to work. I got out and checked under a streetlight but couldn't really see what the problem was. I checked again in the parking garage when I got to work but still didn't have any visual clues why the alarm was visible. When I got home and got out my pressure gauge I found that one tire was at 18lbs so I promptly pumped it back up and got out a light for a closer inspection. When I spotted a metallic blob on the tire tread I knew I need to visit my friendly local tire installer the next day.
What we found when we got the tire off was not a pretty sight:
The offending piece of metal was some sort of shaft roughly 1 1/4" long and 0.275" in diameter. Sadly the limit for patching on a passenger tire is 0.25" so there was nothing I could do but call Tirerack and order a new tire while driving around on a snowtire with the ultimate stud.
We had no choice but to remount the tire and I have been driving it (only when necessary) that way up until today. The TPMS icon faithfully went out every time I reinflated the tire and let me know every time it went back below 25psi. Kind of comforting to see how it works and the fact that it does.

While I have lots of nice Tirerack experiences through the years this was not one of their stellar moments. When I called last Thursday to get a new tire, I asked about expedited shipping. The response was that the quote was for "overnight" from Reno. I was delighted with the response and wrapped up the sale. Sadly the salesdroid response in this case was a half truth at best - the shipping company that Tirerack had engaged is named California Overnight and the delivery was anything but that. I was expecting delivery last Friday and as it turned out it didn't show up until last night too late to get it installed. The shipping company couldn't even tell me where the tire was when I called them yesterday and it took 2 hours to get someone to finally claim that it was on a truck and would be delivered for certain by 5:00PM. It showed up at 6:55 when the tire installer closes at 7:00PM.
The moral of this story is to demand that Tirerack tell you exactly who the shipping company is and when you can expect delivery. "Overnight" was nothing less than a complete BS response on their part and I am pretty angry about the end result. I will make sure that this shipping company never is allowed to be responsible for transporting any future product I purchase and will be sending Tirerack a note describing dissatisfaction with this transaction.
