i phone 5s and the E89

Buongiourno,

Up-grading to said phone next week, yes yes I know it's old hat now but if you'd seen what I've been using you'd understand...

Anyhoo, any of you tech bods know if it'll just click in the holder under the armrest or do I need to buy a cradle? Also can you transfer music to the cars hard drive from the phone? Not strictly needed but I'm curious.

Thanks as always if anyone can give the heads up.

Any modern phone will use the bluetooth to play music to your e89. I wouldn't bother with with a cradle, just stick the phone in the centre console. It will connect via the bluetooth.

Get the cradle. Much better reception and looks/fits better. I got one off e bay for £50 when I changed to 5s earlier in year. BMW/Mini is the same one.

Yes I'd rather get a cradle, cheers Obs-com.

Thanks for the other replies too chaps.

Benefits of buying a cradle are that it uses the cars antenna to strengthen the signal BUT there are two versions one will allow you to play music whilst the phone is in the cradle whilst the other one won't but the latter is much cheaper than the media one.

I just use Bluetooth and a cable to charge using the USB in the armrest. Works very well.

I used to buy the cradles for all my previous cars and phones but after the year it took for the iPhone 5 cradle to come to market I decided it was too much of an outlay for a years use so I've never bothered since.

I have a iPhone 5 and I have it connected by bluetooth and can make/receive calls but for some reason I can't get it to play music through it. At one point I had google maps interrupting the radio to give me directions through the speakers but this has stopped now as well. Have I pressed something I shouldn't in my car, have tried loads of searches online but cant get it to work? Any help greatly appreciated.

Same problem here. No iDrive but have professional head unit with enhanced Bluetooth. My iPhone 6 will not stream to the car; only plays via the aux jack. Even bought a cradle and tried that but no joy. Took it back to BMW. Must assume that the hu will not receive Bluetooth media but will receive call data. Bucket of sh1te.

I did think about a cradle for the car but I tend to keep my phone in a cover - I couldn't be chewed to take it out every time I get into the car.
Bluetooth seems to do it all

I'm no expert, but hsve comms and media pack. Maybe thats it? I think you see the phone on the external devices screen. I will check in the morning.

The other problem I found with true cradle in other cars I've had is I would often leave the phone in the car.

I have only had my e89 for around 2 weeks and have to say connecting the phone, specially for music playback is a proverbial pain in the *#¥ :headbang:

My phone (5s) is paired and connected ok, after getting back in the car each time it seems to take a lot of fiddling and waiting beforeI can get music playback from the phone. My wife's phone is even worse, it's a 6 and just seems to hate connecting to music playback, I can do it eventually but I expected more from the idrive and Bluetooth to be honest.

We also have a Ford Focus and the phone connectivity is seemless by comparison.

Maybe it will get easier as I learn how this all works in time but I'm not holding my breath...
