I need (want) more power!

i'd be inclined to go somewhere like Birds or Schnitzer. You'll pay more but it will have been properly researched and tested.

Birds do a Hartge 366hp upgrade for the 35i. You could have a quaife LSD whilst you're at it! :driving:

For both of those were talking four grand plus.. No

Sod it, life is short, if I bugger it up at least I'll have a nice looking non moving car on the drive rofl. I can go sit in it, drop the top and get a tan even if it no longer moves.

I'm sure all will be well, I've had lots of niggly issues but none that have ever meant a reliability issue. Besides I quite like the idea of the turbos giving up so I can put some bigger ones on ! ;)

After my play with the TTS today, I forgot how much I love this car at full chat. The sound is fantastic. More power please!

I think 350-360 is about all the car can manage re using effectively. I was told the 35iS will go to 400 but when I was asked what was the max recommended before the thing starts spinning up everywhere they (DMS) said about 360.

I find with 335bhp another 20-25 would be my preference - it would give it more bite without setting fire to the tyres every time I tried to use it. Big numbers are nothing without control and as I say I think 350-360 would be a hoot !!

I won't map mine as it still has 2 years of warranty and I would worry (thus I started off by getting the 35iS with a bit more courtesy of BMW) but if you are not concerned then go for it

For me the argument about warranty is car age irrelevant as it will still cost the same to fix no matter it's age.

I just fancy getting a bit more out of her and revitalise the marriage a bit!

Guy with a 35iS on the meet today has 409 Bhp.....

Wow ! DMS quoted me 402 or thereabouts. I just can't see how you can deploy that power on our crappy roads. When I have had mapped stuff before it can detract from the enjoyment the car gives if the numbers are too high. IMO of course :)

So he reckons a 360hp 35i is quicker than a 997GT3 RS up to 170mph. Mmmmm.

The only important element, is its easy to do and its fast.

Hi

Just been on that DMS site, a massive increase for the 35is Z4 .. BHP and torque have a big increase. Is this achieved mainly by mucking about with the boost pressures ?

regards

We've run ESS maps, stage 1/2 since July 2012, no issues, zero fault codes and our 35i runs much nicer with a cleaner pick up from low revs and the extra power is very addictive.

Although with the UK become more of a police state, I'm not sure we'll get another performance car

I spoke to them and they say there are differences over the 35i which are not apparent until you tune them, thus the higher figures for the 35iS. Presumably those differences allow more advance and boost ? They are the people to answer that as it is certainly outside of my knowledge. They told me the 35iS is effectively the 1M engine.

As I love my warranty they won't be getting my business just yet though :)

I've spent a lot of time researching and playing around with tuning the N54 engine in my Z.
My 35i is currently outputting just above 360hp at the wheels which I think is just above 400bhp at the crank with just an ECU tune and no additional hardware mods(+94bhp!). I have tuned it to be quite conservative as I feel I don't need any more power but there's more power available if I get bored.

If you want to push the limits of your car you can go all the way to 470hp (at the wheels!) on the stock turbos. There is even a member on bimmerpost who has a DCT Z4 with an upgraded turbo who I assume is putting down over 500whp so the DCT transmission can certainly take it.

Both the 35i and 35is have the same engine so they will remap up to exactly the same numbers. Most tuners will in fact flash a 35is car with a tuned 35i ROM which disables the 'is' features like overboost.

My advice would be to get yourself a tool which allows you to write to the ECU yourself as the dealer will re-flash your car every time it goes in for work and you will need to get it re-applied. The COBB is the most widely supported ECU tool but works out quite expensive to get in the UK.
The most beginner friendly forum to read about engine tuning is the N54 section at E90post. It's a 3 series forum but we share the same engine and the E90 platform has a much larger user base. (I'll PM you a link as I'm not sure of cross linking is allowed)

It is actually possible to tune the car yourself for free but the current flashing tool is temperamental so only recommended for tech savvy users.

The most important part of an engine remap is to get the tune tweaked for your car. Most companies that offer remaps will use a standard map for your car and have no knowledge on how to tweak the maps. There's a couple of small US based companies operating over at E90post that will do this for a cost (£100~).
You flash your ECU with the COBB then run a log of engine data while you are driving it then send them your log. They will then adjust a few parameters in the flash file and you load it into your car with the COBB.

Have you thought of having an JB4?

Had one on my 335i, and currently on my 28i

When I had an warranty work done on the 335i - 10 minute wip it out and no visible signs of it been attached.

Also you can check error logs and turn on or off on the fly.

The JB4 is a piggyback unit that frigs sensor readings so that the car increases boost and fuelling without realising it.

The gearbox varies it's clutch engagement speed and pressure depending on the load which the engine is producing. Because the engine thinks it is producing 300bhp it will prepare the gearbox for a shift at 300bhp when infact it is producing 380bhp thanks to the piggyback unit. This results in an unhappy DCT.

There is a workaround for this in the JB4 community which involves flashing your cars ECU with a laptop. So you're essentially going to the effort of remapping your car just to fix the shortcomings of the piggyback. The ECU flash tool that they produce for the task is also very hit and miss. You can easily end up with a bricked ECU.

A piggyback like the JB4 is perfect if the ECU is not cracked. But thankfully on the N54 platform the ECU is easily accessible.
