I need some help - but not straight-forward

Hi all,
I have a dilemma.
I live in Norfolk. My Dad lives in Rustington, West Sussex. I have not been able to see him since the 28th December last year.
He is 78, has severe COPD and the week before the virus struck he was told he needed a new heart valve, and without it he had 2 years tops!
Of course, now there is no chance that op will happen any time soon.
I spoke to him tonight and he is scared! Even though he is far too stubborn to admit it.
Obviously, he is one of the vulnerable and stuck indoors for 12 weeks at least.
His next door neighbours are saints! They currently shop for 8 vulnerable households in the street, and in addition, as members of the Lions, they do an extra shop to donate to a food bank. My Dad is in very good hands.
However, once a week he used to go out for a pub lunch. Now he can't do that.
He told me tonight he really misses his weekly pint.
But he will not ask his neighbour to fetch beer as 'it is heavy and not essential'.
I really wish I could get him a pint of bitter right now! I am wondering if I'll ever get to drink one with him again to be honest.

So! The point is this. Is there anyone close enough who could take my Dad a beer?

Before I go any further, yes I do understand it may not be seen as essential and anyone doing this could be castigated for it.
But I'm still asking, just in case.

If anyone would be prepared to take a few bottles or cans of bitter and drop them at my Dad's door I would be forever in their debt.

I would obviously pay the cost of the beer, plus fuel if needed. And if the worst happened and plod pulled them over I would even reimburse the fine.

I am not asking anyone to break the rules. I fully understand the situation.

I'll just wait and see.

Thanks for reading this anyway.

I've sent bottle of whiskey from St Georges in the post - does nobody do mail order?

So far found two local to him that are currently shut down.
May just have found another. Working on it now.

Good luck mate - I hope you find someone who can help.

I’m looking online for you too - nothing jumping out at the moment.

Fingers crossed for you!

If your dad has one of the official letters identifying him as being at risk and you register on the government website you will be able to get him a guaranteed supermarket delivery slot. We have registered my mother-in-law and now have a recurring weekly slot from ASDA for her and my father-in-law. They live in in South Yorkshire but we did all the set up on the Internet from our home in Lincolnshire. The questionnaire is simple and straightforward to complete. Each week we submit the order for them.
If your dad hasn’t had the official letter it would be worth talking to his GP. to see if he is entitled to have one. We had to go through this stage to get said letter for my mother-in-law.
If you were successful he could order his groceries including a few cans of beer.
Hope this helps.

Yes, I'd happily do the same for anyone near me.

I hope you manage to get something arranged.

It's a shame you don't know how to contact his neighbours as they sound like they would help you out.

Home delivery sounds like a good idea if he can do it.

This is one of the awful consequences of our current situation, your dads op is delayed and you are unable to spend precious time with him.

The psychological “boost” (if that is a thing?) to you both of getting your dad that pint is priceless.

Essential shopping? Well, not from a nutritional point of view, but I’d argue that from a mental well-being point of view it probably could be.

Definitely look into the vulnerable person status and shopping delivery slots as mentioned above. We have that and the “government” letter came via Debs GP.

I can’t help you or your dad but I really hope you can get something sorted.

Daft as it may sound but would Amazon be a possibility?

Various beers available for delivery...

Someone on here must live close enough to drop a few beers on his doorstep. I'd gladly do it if I was local

I was dying for a beer and my mum dropped off 4 peroni's to me yesterday. Needless to say they all got drank  I'm now beerless again as I won't go to a shop, but honestly it felt so good enjoying myself in the sun today with a few beers. Mentally is does the world of good if you really fancy something

Here’s a copy of my letter which qualifies the recipient a few things including guaranteed shopping slots As you’ll see your dad qualifies through number 3.

It can also be registered over the phone the details for each area are in the letter, or online if he didn’t receive one. I got 3 phone calls yesterday. 1st one asking if I was ok, wanted to register and if I needed a food box delivered. 2nd about the preferential shopping slots, 3rd from local food hub coordinator to discuss getting slots arranged as its not up and running yet here as nearest supermarket that do delivery are 40 miles away. Getting a call back on Tuesday with an update.

Good news for you is it’s just a normal shop so you can stick in the beers, you might need to stick in a few different types as there’s still the three item limit afaik.

Hope you get something sorted out for him

I’ve used Beers of Europe (in Norfolk) a few times for gifts...and for unusual foreign ales...but they’re still delivering.

They’re not supermarket cheap, but still probably less per pint than a normal (i.e. not London) pub.

Free delivery over £60 - not even the cost of a good night out  ........ if I could still do it :drinking:

Thanks to everyone for all the kind messages and good suggestions.
I spoke to the old beggar about home delivery, but he perversely wants to keep working with his neighbours until they can't for some reason.
But refuses to ask them to get beer as it's not essential. :headbang:
He appears to be one one the batch of people who missed the first draft of government letters. Hopefully that will resolve soon. I have registered him on line.
Amazon is a good shout.
Late last night I found a local brewery to him whose website is still taking orders. I am going to try contacting them first to make sure before I send the money.

However, from my personal point of view, I feel much better just to have vented my frustrations and had all you lot come back with messages of support.
Nice to feel so many people I've never met have got my back.

Many thanks, and Happy Easter.

Martin
