So I'm not sure if this will cheer you up, or P*ss you off. Apologies if it's the latter.
This was my view today while working on a project to remove decommissioned fibre equipment from exchanges around the South Island of NZ.
Sorry about the wind noise (if your speakers are on), it was only a very light breeze but the phone's mic is quite sensitive, and I don't know how to mute the audio once I've uploaded the clip (yet). The video was taken around the Otira/Arthur's Pass region heading towards the West Coast.

The South Island of NZ is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I could be very happy living there and can't wait to be able to visit again.

Too many Dutch people living there already so no space for another one :D

Lovely place though

Thanks Shane.

That's the perfect antidote to looking at yet another Excel spreadsheet. :D

Absolutely stunning, is there anywhere for a police car to be discreetly tucked away on that straight or can you get a proper blast down it?

I was fortunate to spend time in NZ and this reminds me of so many roads particularly on the South Island, absolutely stunning ... I don't remember much of a police presence at all and they didn't seem to 'lay in wait' or park up as they do in the states..i do remember seeing that kiwis mark road deaths with black posts (if memory serves) and there were a few of them!!

The good news for us stuck here in UK winter, surrounded by Covid, is that, yes there will be and there is a greater chance than in UK that a radar trap will be operating from it. I was the fasting thing on the road out there, in my 1.2 ltr automatic, until I realized why all the locals stick around the limit on those roads.

Happily it was seeing others pulled over that educated me. :D

That looks fantastic.

I'm not in the lest bit jealous honestly. :headbang:

If I could live anywhere.......
So why are you still here. Get that new life sorted.

Too many excuses, somewhere in the multiverse I went there after being made redundant from Ciba-Geigy in 92. If only we could jump to one and see how our choices, the ones that might have been, actually are

Funny you should ask, one of my workmates said he got his Audi TT up around 200+ Km/h along one of these straights. But then he also rides a Kawasaki Ninja so I don't think he really cares about life or consequences lol..
As far as police, I've very rarely seen them sitting along roads like this because there are too many of them to patrol. Usually you see them coming around the corner in the opposite direction as you wind around the 'fun' roads. Last one flashed his lights (headlights thankfully) at me as a bit of a "slow down noddy, don't make me have to find somewhere to do a U-turn just to write you a ticket" - so I gave him a wave and my best look of contrition and continued on my journey at a more sedate pace.
As a bit of a bonus, the roads around that part of the country are usually dotted with white campervans full of tourists going 'ooh, ahh look at the scenery' while weaving across the lanes, or slowing down to enjoy the spectacle, but Covid's cut us off from the rest of the world so the roads are often as you see them in that video I posted.
I'm certainly not smug about it, as tourism is one of NZ's main sources of revenue and so many businesses and people are suffering with the lack of visitors right now. :(
So when you can, please come back - we really do love you(r money) :D

I can't say I recall seeing black posts, but you do see white crosses with flowers at some spots along the roads to mark where road fatalities have occurred, usually along country highways/roads

Your spot on, after 30 years i seemed to recall something else. Had a chat on whats app with a mate from the uk ( but born in nz) who returned a few years and lives on the south island - says some of these caused by visitors driving on wrong side of the road. Experienced the same last year in scotland when driving from loch ness area to fort william, bloody scary!
