i have had a ipod cable fitted but the place that fitted it failed and its still recognising the cd player. if i take the cd chnager magazine out and reinsert it empty it will play the ipod untill it finds no cds then it turns it off again. if i take the stereo out how do i disconnect the cd change?. i have aux and nav fitted if that relevant. thanks for any helps

You need to identify the 3 cables which go to the CD changer and remove them from the plug in the back of the stereo.
I have done this in order to use the cables for Aux instead. However...
Shipkiller has a great how to website http://68.230.199.103:8080/Z4_Stuff.htm, on which you can find the pin layout for the audio connectors.

You need to remove the CDC LR-, CDC L+, and CDC R+ cables from the "B" (white) plug, these are pins 2, 8 and 9. (top right diagram, bottom left image) You can do this with the help of a small screwdriver.

Let us know if you manage.

I think we are talking different things here - as he mentioned magazine, he must be talking about the cd CHANGER unit from the centre console. Those cables are (just about) reachable from the boot.

I believe you only need to disconnect the ibus cable from behind the radio or even switch it so you can use both Ipod and CD changer. (Might help if we know what ipod connection you have and where its installed, don't really want to get the the back of the CD changer if you don't have to.)

If the BMW iPod connector is being used, when I had one fitted the Dealer confirmed that fitting disables the CD multichanger
ie you have one or the other operating my assumption being that the iPod cable replaces the changer cable in the head unit

AS PVR says you need to disconnect from the changer, from memory I had to do this even though the other end has already be removed the the headunit.

be interested to know why, just doesn't seem to make sense :? how would the headunit know it was there if it isn't plugged in to the back of it?

the CD changer identifies itself with the stereo via the IBus... you need to disconnect the CD changer from the iBus cable in order for the stereo not to find it.

You can either disconnect the ibus from the back of the stereo (in which case nothing but the standard stereo will work - including the iPod device and BT, etc). OR (and this is what i did!) you can pull up the vertical carpet in the back of the boot and unplug the three-wire plug from the back end of your CD changer.

With that disconnected, your cd changer will have no power and will also not be connected to the IBUs - meaning the stereo wont find it.
It also means that the iPod interface (which lies and tells the headunit it's a cd changer) will actually work :)

Disconnecting the audio cables from the back of the stereo is a redherring... as on DSP cars, you'll find you dont have any wires going to those pins from the cd changer in the first place ;)

if you disconnect the iBus from behind the stereo, then you wont get the iPod interface to work.

I managed to get it switchable between the iPod and the CD Changer, but I had to interrupt the iBus and power at the CD changer end, as well as interrupt the iBus and power at the iPod interface end.
this resulted in having to run a single "trigger" line down from the back of the headunit, through the centre console and out back to the Cd changer... where I had a small circuit board with a SPDT switch that would "enable" the cd changer when power was detected in the "trigger" line.
The same circuit board then got connected at the iPod interface, but it would "disable" the iPod interface when power was detected in the "trigger" line.
turned out to be relatively easy, but it was a PITA to actually get working right :)

thanks for all the help.can anyone send a pic of the boot with the cable that needs disconnecting?

you dont need a pic, just undo the carpet in the boot pull it back and remove the cables from the CD changer, it's as easy as that.
