I have to tell someone...

I like the update on the wall OP.... and plus, you've managed to save some money from the original quote... well done! She can't be mad about that!

I can't remember having too many DIY nightmares.... except when I was trying to change the brakes on my first car...

I only had 2 scissor jakes to hold the car up...then realised I needed something from the house... and my keys were still in the garage door...

When I went to get them out... I put some pressure on the car, and both scissor jacks gave way, landing my car on the ground - on its disks...

:headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

My friend was working underneath his car in the drive. Problem was. He had it in the air via one of those old bumper jacks. Much to my horror. The jack gave way and the car fell on him. Still don't know how. But I ran to the car. Grabed hold of the wheel opening and lifted it up. He crawled out. Totally unhurt! That was scary!

My father drilled through a live wire. The daft old bugger didn't notice there was a socket vertically below where he was drilling. A big flash, the wallpaper peeled off the wall and my dad shot backwards!

Scary at the time (I was only wee) but funny now.

I did the same thing in my first house in the UK. I could not believe how they wire sockets here, does not happen on the continent where the wires are behind the brick and not in plasterboard. Obviously plasterboard is not used anyway else either.

Happened to my Dad when he was fitting an extractor fan for us when we moved in - straight into the cooker mains :o

He's still alive

Well we do have a lot of bricks that were meant for edging the lawn and building a pond. Then we discovered how much fun the cars were and the bricks are stuck behind the shed.

I fitted a dishwasher in our house, trapped the outlet pipe under the leg of the dishwasher leg, nothing untoward about, for a couple of years. the dishwasher leg split the pipe, and the waste from the dishwasher emptied underneath the house. The dishwasher was sealed and built in to the kitchen so outwardly there was no sign....

On hot days, you could smell something " a little off" and couldnt find out why - - for a couple of years ....

I opened up the floorboards to do some more DIY and found a couple of years' worth of dishwasher waste under the house, all rotting nicely - It still took some while to track down the fault ...

That took some cleaning -- i think that's the DIY my wife is most fond of mentioning, how i made the house smell

Great work Jem, but can't help instantly thinking of your fireplace's chimney as a large phallic object in the background, I thought it was before I looked at the photo properly and recognised the shapes and background etc and got the perspective and realised what it actually was, he he......

My neighbour had a reputation for being crap at DIY. The worst thing he did was drill through a partition wall using a cavity wall drill bit (about a foot long), straight into the back of a bedroom wardrobe, shredding several of his wife's dresses.

In my last house when I put the log burner on, 'one or two' ladies found out about another Phallic object... came to the conclusion Log burner's are the best sex aid on the planet

'Worst?'

She should have been grateful... as he had just provided her with a new justifiable shopping opportunity :D

Just remembered lol, when i was moving a beam in the front room i knocked an hole straight through to my next door neighbours. I did not realise it was only single brick. Good job she likes me lol

 Brilliant! Hard to detect stuff like that. I always apply the knock test when drilling for bits like that.

With my first house, I decided that I could board the loft myself. All was going swimmingly, cutting the boards neatly to fit around all the different support beams and making sure I didn't step through the ceiling...I got my dad up to have a good mooch and show him my amazing work...he gently bumped up and down to tease me a little. Everything was sturdy and he was impressed. So impressed in fact that he started laughing.

Confused, I asked him what was so funny? He said nothing and went back down. I started clearing up and then found out what was so funny. My dad had noticed the power cable for the jigsaw going under the boards but couldn't see the jigsaw itself. I'd covered it up somewhere beneath the boards. I had to pull up half the bloody things before I found it. Dad hasn't let me forget it since.

A friend of mine was fixing a patient's fractured hip when he managed to run a drill bit out of the bone and through both the femoral artery and vein....not quite DIY but does that count? :headbang:

Wow, few cursed words behind their mask  story from undergrad of someone at another uni got spotted by one of our tutors squirting anesthetic out of someone's cheek ... They'd supposed to have been depositing it on the inside of the ramus of the mandible , left them with a wet neck and I can only imagine a complete bollocking for being a dork.
