I hate January

Not only is the weather in the UK shite all the time.....it's dark more often than it's light, it's always 'dank and cold'....
This month I have had to pay:
The UK Gov £1,050 for car tax on two (ordinary) cars. One which I can't use on the road cos of the weather but have to tax or the insurance is void.
Insurance on two cars.
Buildings and contents insurance (which is money for old rope)
Income tax, as being self employed the Gov think it's a good idea that we pay half our yearly income tax in January, just to cheer us up.
Massive electric and gas bills from December (cos the visiting family used loads over Xmas then fecked off without even a thank you).

Then to top it all off, I have to spend half of next week doing paperwork collecting tax for the UK Gov and paying it to them via a VAT return. And if I'm a day late submitting my return for the tax I collect for them, they fine me hundreds!

No wonder I suffer from depression. :rolleyes:
 
It could be worse though.

I currently have to pay £1,190 Road Tax for 2 cars and don't get any opportunity to "massage" my income tax as it's all PAYE.

As the song goes, always look on the bright side of life!

I don't know where people get the idea that the self employed choose how much tax they pay. It's nonsense. We pay the same rates as you lot do, just get none of the extra benefits.

The biggie is 'employer's pension contributions'. I haven't had any of those in the past 40 years. None.
Not had any 'employer's NI contributions' either. Self employed have to pay as much as PAYE do but with no subsidy from anyone.
Then there are the 'working hours'. As an employee you get allocated hours and 'breaks'. Never had any of those.

I have to pay an accountant. They are around £1,000 a day these days. I have to pay for software to submit paperwork to the Gov for tax returns and VAT, as MTD is compulsory. All these come off any earnings. PAYE people don't pay any of these; their employers do.

When it comes to retirement age, the average self employed person is around 25% poorer than an equivalent PAYE employee. But of course everybody who is employed 'thinks' that the self employed are all rich and have an easy life and retire at 50. It simply isn't true.
 
Could be worse. I Went in the garage today to give the engine on my Mx5 a warm through and realised the battery charger was in read only mode. Tried to start the car but no joy. Charger now charging, I hope. Will try again tomorrow. With this continuous grit or rain, it has to be the longest any car of mine has every spent in the garage. 😟
 
Being self employed myself, I feel your pain... working lots of lonely hours, my only companions, the radio and this forum 😭

You should ask your boss for a raise;)

I'm self-employed too and have all of the expenses you listed and many more. However, I took the day off today for my daughter's first day at school without having to ask permission from anyone, fill in any paperwork or ensure that someone was available to cover my work.

Come on Andy. You have a lovely wife and daughter, live in a big house at the centre of the universe and own a (nearly) Ferarri. In addition your posts on here provide everyone with a huge amount of entertainment. What more could you ask for?😀😀😀
 
Just to make my January even more depressing, my son and I have been doing a water-only challenge, where we only drink water for the whole month of January.

No coffee, tea, beer, wine, juice, squash or energy drinks!

I'm looking forward to a nice cup of coffee tomorrow morning!
 
Well you certainly know how to get the year off to a miserable start, although after that I suppose things can only get better!

I can't swim, so my water only challenge was fatal.:eek: My son survived though, which is all a father could wish for.
