Swapped my lights to clear ones this weekend. Couple of questions though... not sure wether to change my brake light to the clear one I have and whether to leave out the french fries?

Nice, Peddy

Although I thought you were talking abuot the other end of the car :poke:

My preference is with French fry on... it's one of those personal things - plenty on here with great looking cars who prefer them off.

Not sure about the brake light, you can do it with yours - with Titanium Silver I prefer the contrast. I think possibly yes :?

Id say Change the brake light to clear and french fry on...

but then I would say that :D:

clear brake light and french fry off for me.

its a marmite thing i think. try putting them on and standing back. easy to take back off

french fry?

the bit on the rear lights on pre-face lift models that separates the reversing/fog lights from the main lights...

yours is a coupe so post-facelift and no french fry :D

Gannet,

Loke your look (the Zed.....) with the clear high level brake light.

fanks :D

was a no brainer - had to replace the red because of a crack and the clear was cheaper :D

then had to do the sides when one developed a hole somehow :o

clear brake light and french fries binned, rubbish idea anyway the french fries, they just clutter up an already cluttered rear end. i removed the z4 badge as well, looks way better. car is looking cool by the way !

Looks good Peddy :)

I have the french fries on and a clear 3rd brake.
I have the Z4 badge removed as well but recently im thinking about putting it back on, hhmm not sure :?

Hi Peddy - Looking really good.

In terms of the questions - no suprise from me (but it's all about personal choice)
Try to ignore the quad and diffuser, but 4 spot whites sit perfectly with a clear centre brake and arguably even picks up on the 'clear void of the roof spoiler with hardtop on) Delete the Z4 badge as it's not symetrical. Leave the french fries - they are a real neat design cue. I'd also consider a b/w badge change that works so well on the Sterling grey.

Here we are basking in long forgotten Silverstone sun

and closer to see the fries and with top on:

Pardon me for being stupid but, ... are the bulbs/led's red because Clear lights are illegal on the back of a vehicle here (except for reverse lights). :?

My indicators are clear bulbs that flash amber (don't ask - I have no idea how) The fog is a silvered bulb that lights red and all the lenses are OEM (no tints or film)
All 100% legal and MOT passed without question

Thanks, I had to look at the back of my zed to see what the heck was on there.. All red with a strip of clear backups. 8)

Thanks for all the input and comments!

CJ, I have to agree with you there about the clear lights complementing the roof spoiler (it actually looks a bit like you've got a spoiler in the 2nd pick).

The french fries i'm not too sure yet, but I think i'll probably end up putting them back on. On some angles it's obvious that there's something missing.

In fact I quite like the Z4 badge!

Re CF badges - I like but I will leave this until later. Definetly after ALL my current projects are complete (M front bumper, clear headlights and Si brakes)!

Thanks again and appologies for the crap picture. I really need to take some decent pics of my Zed!!!

Interesting footnote that when it came to production the french fries were one of the most difficult items to fit on the car.
Seems they arrived separate and had to be manually fitted on the line to match the body paint.

Production wanted them off for ease, but the designer won on the basis they were a critical design feature.

im not sure 2 pieces of cheap plastic stuck to the back of the car are a critical design feature ?. there are far more interesting design elements to the z4 than those plastic after thought french fries surely...

Not my words - quoted from ' BMW Z4 Design Development and Production' and quoted from designer Anders Warming, where he stated they were 'an important element of the design and needed to stay'. My bad to use the word 'critical'.

Elsewhere the taillights are noted as 'a strong design element with round shape reminiscent of the classic 2002'

I agree there are stronger features, but the point is in the designers mind they are an important element, which I just happen to agree with, removing them ruins and cheapens it and think the facelights in particular just missed the point.

However the beauty is each does to their Zed what they like and want :)
