I've had 47mpg out of mine on the A1, roadworks at 50mph that went on for miles. Really is quite astonishing for such a car. But most of the time she's mid 20's as I do a lot of town driving.
hey koolchris99, what speed were you doing on your journey, and at what point did you reset the average mpg display? Just wanted to ask, as I'm going to do a fair bit of driving at the end of the week so I'll have a go too!
I've done this a few times travelling leeds to london on M1. My experience tells me that the sweet spot is 55 or 56 mph (in 6th gear),...and yes being behind a tall truck adds about 3 or 4 mph.
Just off a tangent from that hypermiler site I found this: http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/z4
The results seem shocking in comparison to what I've had and what I've commonly seen quoted on here. Not at all helped above by the complete lack of engine size though.

Maybe its in US gallons, (click UK top left to convert to the full fat UK measure).
Whilst the 3.0 M54 isn't bad on petrol the newer engines certainly sound impressively frugal considering their output and size. I typically get 27ish on average, its a couple of mpg worse on Tesco 99 compared to Shell Vpower but I just fill it up when its empty and have my fun.
