Hydraulic steering conversion - N52-engined Z4 models

I think it was to clean out the roller bearings, this is from another thread from a chap who used a reamer https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2005415#p2005415

I did the job in a bit of a hurry while the Boss was away to stop any " you would live in that garage if you could " comments so didn't have time for a video but I'm sure I can mock up some pictures if that helps Hydro ?

That would be great if it's not too much trouble.
Here is some pictures of the steering column yoke that holds the uj , I pushed the bearings inwards once the joint was cut out , then used a 15mm reamer or you could carefully use a dremel to clean of the metal tabs ( call stakes ) to allow the new bearing to be fitted from the outside.
I hope this helps !

With a reamer will be easier. Anyway, it is simple to remove those "bearing holders" which are shown above pictures.

A lots of thanks to the author and other guys who help out so many enthusiasts :)

How did you secure the cross in the yokes once you had dremelled out the old retaining things and put everything back together?
I used a hard centre punch to re pin the yokes to stop the cup needle bearings from moving

Got mine booked in to be done in a couple of weeks, I'm so hyped
good stuff.
Mine is back on the road , the steering is great at speed but it feels quite heavy when parking or maneuvering slowly , I would say it feels heavier than with the sport button on.

I have the higher pressure LF30 pump and have ordered the hose to match it to see how much lighter it makes it.
I am thinking that my purple tag rack maybe valved for the higher pressure pump as they were fitted on some of the E46's as the LF20 can be unreliable.

Having said this, as it is now there is no wandering at 60-80mph and no tramlining so if the LF30 makes it too light I will go back to plan A .
Either way its a vast improvement

I don't mind heavy steering at low speeds to be honest but interesting to note that the LF30 pump might improve that aspect.

You need to have an alignment done after changing to hydraulic steering rack.
I would suggest applying Z4M settings.

Steering effort is mostly impacted by camber.

Z4M also has asymetric front wishbone bushings with increased castor for slightly improved straightline stability.
(partnumber for bushings L+R 31107838575, or including brackets 31107836862 + 31107836863)

I have had the alignment done but granted it was to standard e85 specs .
Thanks hydro for the part numbers ...will look into that too
