HVA noise... How loud is it?

My coupe has the N52 engine. On cold start up a couple of times the engine sounds a bit rattly/ tappetty. I've listened to the HVA videos on YouTube and it sounds like a regular clunk clunk noise. People also complain its so noisy it's embarrassing which isn't the case for me.

Does the N52 make a bit of noise from cold or should I be concerned?

The level of noise is very subjective, complicated by different N52s suffering from this condition much more than others. Apparently, some are so loud, there is clearly something wrong. Others just sound like a solid lifter engine with a few valves in need of adjustment.

For most, the noise isn't so much cold related as related to length of trips. People that tend to take short trips will get the noise, those that only take longer trips, say more than 30 min., may not notice anything. Another factor is what rev range one typically uses. Higher revs tend to ensure the HVAs fully fill with oil.

But considering short trips can mean cold engine, maybe there is a relationship. If it just sounds like lifters out of adjustment, there's little reason for concern. Just keep short trips to a minimum. If it sounds like hammering so loud that something could be damaged, then maybe you should consider replacing the lifters.

Thanks for such a thorough reply. I made another video of the noise today and it certainly isn't anything like the YouTube examples and is most likely just to be normal cold engine noise.
I do tend to do lots of short journeys though so will make sure I get out and give it a good thrashing every now and then!

My 2.5si that suffered this always did long journeys, but wasn't used everyday so gave the oil more time to drain out of the head area.

How long does the noise last for when it happens, and often is it happening.

I don't mind popping round one day if you need a pair of ears.
