Hunting clunking DCT

As per title the last half dozen times I've started the car the transmission is clunking and 'hunting' as though trying and failing to engage a gear when idling in neutral. It's enough to slightly vibrate the car, fairly loud noise too. It stops when I engage drive and does'nt seem to do it until cold again.

Anyone else had this? Looks like a trip to the dealers under warranty as it's definately not normal. :(

Cheers for reading.

First I've heard of anything like this...

That's a shame.

Only thing I can think is it's trying to engage first gear pre-instruction but failing until I ask it to with the shifter, as it sounds as though it's trying but failing to engage, or is in conflict with itself as to wether it should engage or not, that's a strange explanation but it's what it sounds like.

Def sounds like a trip to the dealer is in order. I would try video'ing it if you can if it only does it when cold ... just to avoid the annoying 'It didn't do it for us sir and it is behaving normally'.

Hello

Just checked mine .. and my example does not do this ?

please keep us posted if you take to the dealers with prognosis

Video is a good idea, not sure it would pick the clunking up but definately worth a try, thanks for the note SO8.

I will JB.

Took it to Nottingham and back yesterday from the Peak District so a fairly decent run in it, on the move it's perfect, changes gear in auto and manually as it should, on parking in neutral it gives a fairly constant small clicking noise, it does'nt hunt and it's faint but it's there.

I feel a "They all do that sir" argument looming already...

There's quite a bit on other BMW forums about various clunks on the DCT box. not sure if any are the same as your experiencing but might be worth a google search etc

Yes I'll do some reading first MACK,

Quiet as you like today, not a hint of any clunking.

The last two weeks have been quite short trips everyday to look after my old mum after a fall which I don't normally do, I usually have a decent run out in it when I do use it, get it properly warmed through like yesterday's 100 mile trip. Makes one wonder if the short runs out have anything to do with it, I know they should'nt but it's a bit coincidental that it's gone quiet again after a good run yesterday.

Clutching at straws a bit but....

Yes the dealers will have to have it, I'm just a bit reluctant to book it in as I don't like leaving it with anyone but needs must.

Tbh I'm quite surprised no-one has posted a suggestion of fault or diagnosis, I guess it must be quite a rare fault,

You do yes, I was hoping you would have had heard of it when I first posted.

Anyway I'm going to have to keep starting it every night this week as for the 2nd night in a row now it's been normal, no sign of the problem. Annoying as nothing worse than an intermittent fault.

Watch this space.

Only that it's still quiet and has been all week. I have started it every night without fail and been out for a couple of short runs and nothing apart from a slight ticking on Wednesday on start up which disappeared when warm, but nothing like it was. I'm going to talk to the dealer and see if I can pop it in for them to do any quick fluid checks or whatever etc while I wait, you never know someone there might have heard of this so it's probably worth it, also that way it'll be on their records that I've been in with a potential problem if something does manifest itself later on. It's still got just over 2yrs warranty left so no worries.

Cheers for asking, I'll keep the thread updated.

Mine was clunking and clicking when I got it (18k miles), after driving it hard for a while it solved itself.

I can only think adaptations or some software issue - but mine was also making a "click" from 3rd into 4th. That also corrected itself.

Apparently these boxes from Getrag are pretty bomb proof, so I'm sure it's fine :driving:

It's been fine Andy then started shunting on start up last Tuesday night, snicked it into drive and all was well. Went out in it last night, not a sound on start up. I keep meaning to let the dealer have it but A: it's a logistical pain to take it to Sheffield, B: the yard they have is so cramped I'm really scared it'll get scratched as every contract driver and customer and lackey use it, and C: it's so intermittent I'll get fobbed off with the usual smooth talk crap.

It's still got 2 years warranty left so I'm not worried and it drives without fault, it's perfect on the road. I've got enough on at the mo with my heart playing silly buggers too often, and my mum had a fall so I'm doing a lot of care visits and quite frankly I can't be arsed to deal with a fault that is'nt causing any problems, I'll get some time later in the year to take it to Nottingham dealers and they can look at it if it's still clunking.

Cheers for the post though fella and to Stuart.

Mine does it when its cold outside (<4C). Any more than that and it seems fine.

It would seem this is the cause, had nothing now since the weather warmed up, (a bit  ) so I'm putting it down to not using the car for a couple of weeks at a time at best over winter on a dry day and it sitting in a dry but cold garage.
