Hunter 4 wheel alignment (Will it make a difference)

Thinking of taking my Z4 E85 3.0L for a Hunter 4 wheel alignment. Is it worth the £90 to £120 to have it done? Steering is a bit skittish (Not Sticky) When getting up to motorway speeds and I've noticed my N/S front tyre is starting to scrub on the inside which I'm guessing suggests  the Tracking is out. Was going to take it to Mike at the Zed Shed to have the steering column adjusted to hopefully sort the skittish steering problem but as the tyre is scrubbing I thought It would be a better idea to get the Tracking/Wheel alignment sorted first. Has anyone on the forum had this done, and did it make a difference ?

Is it worth having the tracking done first to see if that helps cure any issues? If not, then look at the wheel alignment.
I had 4 wheel alignment done on my e85 and it helped massively. I had a slight vibration through the steering wheel at around 20-30mph.

Getting the tracking done first then finding out it's not made any difference is surely a waste of cash isn't it. ? I'm guessing the Hunter alignment also includes sorting the tracking problem :?

Get them to check the bushes and the seized track rod ends.

If the bushes haven't been changed they'll probably need replacing.

After that's been sorted get the wheels balanced then an alignment check and adjustment.

It'll be like driving a new car.

As skelters said, get the bushes checked first.

I just had my front wishbone bushes replaced (and upgraded) and a full alignment done. The before figures were dreadful and afterwards the car is transformed. I'm so pleased with the result.

I have the exact problem you're talking about and had the 4 wheel alignment done yesterday. Made no noticeable difference, but they did say the bushes looked very worn (which is super common on these cars)

If I were to go back in time I'd get the bushes replaced and the wheel tracking afterwards.

does it feel like its steering unintentionally from the rear? i had the rear trailing arm bushes completely disintegrate once, made the car awful. but easy enough to put in new ones, which made the car feel heaps better.

while you're there, i understand rear lower control arms from an E46 M3 fit straight on, and replace what was previously a bushing with a ball joint, and give greater control of the rear toe angle, at the expense of a tiny bit of NVH.

Hi, just got mine checked in Kwik Fit on their Hunter machine, but they said they couldn't align my wheels as it needs some special tool they don't have. I know BMW is a very rare marque(!), so who can blame them, but does anyone know where I can get it done? In the Surrey/S London area ideally.

I gave up going to garages for wheel alignment years ago because while they may have the kit, they don't know what to do with it.

The special tools I use to do it myself are two bits of fishing line and a ruler.

I had mine done in 2021 and the car was totally transformed so despite needing both front track rods replacing as they were seized solid it was still well worth the £500 or so it cost.

I had it done at TWG Automotive in Camberley because Will who ran it was ex-Sytner, used to race in the BMW Compact Cup series and won the UK Legends race title so knew plenty about BMWs and the best set up. I think he only bought all the kit to set up his race cars!

Unfortunately I believe he has stepped away from TWG to focus more on his racing activities.

Loads of places have the equipment, the problem is finding someone who knows how to use it. :(

Abbey Motorsport in Oxted are well regarded for alignment.

Great thank you, will check them out; I know Oxted.

I know what you mean: I've had a few cars go in for alignment and I'm not convinced the mechanics actually do anything. I remember my old Alfa, which I had supposedly had aligned before, but I took it to a great mechanic my dad used for his Jag to have a tyre fitted and he looked at it and said it had clearly never been aligned, and when I drove it away it was truly like a different car- proper roller skate stuff! So I'd definitely like to get my Zed as sorted as possible.
