Hub refurb

As my wheels are being painted thought I would paint the hubs, I hate rusty hubs.
Replaced the rear pads too and took out 4 ABS sensors and cleaned them.
Wheels having F1 tyres fitted.👍

Mating surfaces should not be painted. Paint goes soft when hot and will reduce the torque on the wheel bolts. Might also make removing the wheels very difficult after they've been on for a while.

Agreed. You could use copperslip to help prevent them sticking on, but the paint will still soften and then it makes a right old mess.
I just overlapped the edge by about 10mm so there was no visible unpainted bit, but left the mating face bare, then added a very thin smear of copperslip.
All a bit late now of course. Hopefully you'll have no issues.

How rusty was it? Not too late to take the disc off and clean the hub properly with a wire brush. Especially where the face meets the lip.

Either that or invest in a big hammer.

Looks smart OP! 8)

As some of the previous comments you do need to be careful. However nasty they look, they still serve a function and you don't want to compromise their function over the aesthetics.

I'd say sand paper. Wire brush will just make a mess IMO.

You also want to be careful with overspray onto the "actual brake disc" by that I mean the section which comes into contact with the brake pad. You will clean up the over spray here when you brake, but too much paint may clog up your pad? Something else to be weary off.

The copper grease, again, make sure that you're careful with where you put this. I put some on the hub section where the 5 wheel bolts go, but also apply to the brake callipers. This makes sure the callipers can move freely when pressing/releasing the brake pedal.

I have to change the discs all round on my Z and on my wife’s 120 sport, I’ve bought Brembo discs and they have a painted surface all on the hub area and the disc edge. I’m assuming then this is ok as it’s done at the factory.
Or does the paint on the hub need to be removed?

I'd expect it would be anodised or some other form of coating, rather than paint. That said, if they're brand new from factory they'll be manufactured to the required tolerances.
