HPI Checks - Dealer Supplied

I've always done my own HPI check when buying a car. However, have seen some dealership supplied HPI checks or equivalent.

Question is - would you trust a dealer HPI check? I'm inclined to think all dealerships are bandits, and can't be trusted. Any alternative opinions?

Surely an HPI check is an HPI check, regardless of who orders it? I guess as long as the date is recent enough for you, it shouldn't matter whether the dealer supplies it or you get your own.

If a dealer provided a HPI check that was incorrect wouldn't they be liable if any issues came of it :?

They will check as much as a private buyer, otherwise they could get caught out also.

I'd always do my own, not because I don't trust the dealer, but it has been known for the person who sold it to the dealer to go out a few days/weeks later and get a loan using the 'lost' logbook as security.

The original HPI check won't show that, but your subsequent one would. It could also have other discrepancies that have been rectified between the original check and your's.

As long as its been done on or very close to the date of purchase and from a reputable HPI checker then I dont see an issue..

A "logbook loan" will not show on an Hpi check. Outstanding finance yes, but not LL's.

I'd definitely do my own check whatever the dealer gave me. Anyone with half an ounce of knowledge of publishing software could knock up a vehicle check in minutes.

I was looking at a 6lt v12 merc in aberdeen at a dealers .....
All docs said the vehicle was ok and finance free ...

i did an hp check and it came up dirty ..... When i called the dealer about it he came up with all kinds of noise about how it was being settled, I walked away
